Hello, I am a competent electrician in home wiring and have been working in home wiring abroad for the last 12 years, now im back in the UK looking for work I will need to pass an exam to get a qualified electrician certificate? how can I get the qualification without going into a training program?

thanks

I think your confidence is going to bite you on the arse!!

Just because you have 14 years experience from/in another country (which you don't seem to want to share) doesn't mean you are competent to undertake working in the UK. You will find that BS7671 isn't something you can pick-up overnight, and seeing as you will be expected to conduct any installation work in the UK to those regulations!! It would seem prudent, to be at least a little conversant with them don't you think??

Anyway, you go ahead and sit what ever exam you think you need without any training, and we'll all watch you fail. And you WILL fail, no matter how good you Think you are, because most of those questions will be based on and around that BS7671, which it seems you know nothing of!!

You mean the old Colonies, ...yeah 15th/16th most of them. Quite a few African/Asian countries too, that are very much based on the older UK regs!! But in this case we don't know where he's been trained, or where he's been practicing his trade. Could well be a European country for all we know!!

speaking from experience ru

Who told you, you were competent? The reason I ask is if it was you! then you are not competent otherwise we would all be competent at anything we wanted to be competent in. Sudan does not have the same regulations as the UK which incidentaly have just been amended. I work in F.E. teaching and managing electrical installation and I get daily phone calls from people who think that becoming an electrician is a 'one day course' activity. Your Sudanese qualifications can be mapped to check if they match current UK qualifications. If you have them contact your nearest F.E. college and they will advise you who to speak to.

Now your talking!! When i was doing my training, Exams Were Exams...

Now, if a smart arse like you, were to have come over in them day's and thought you were just going to need to sit an exam and pass it ''easy peazey'' i'd of quite happily put a months salary on you failing.

You really do need to switch brain into gear, no-ones saying your technical ability is not up to scratch, but your knowledge of UK Reg's is i'm assuming zilch!! Unfortunately for you, you need BOTH to be able to practice your trade. As a tiny example, ...what do you know about RFC and the requirements of testing them??
