Your lucky its wired in SWA, I work in street lighting and 95% of our cables are split concentric, neutral-earth faults galore!
We often have to use methods like in your picture when using SWA, in particular SWA bridge kits, think its pretty standard. Agree though, can't beat a proper gland.

see this every day in street lighting. Worst cases is when aluminium cable is used and no anti-corrosion paste used so the aluminium armouring (earth) has dissolved to nothing at all, and the jubilee clips have dissolved away too.

Lovely.

It's like this on all 17 lamp posts, they where installed less than a year ago no seals fitted on any lights so all filled with water!! All lights wired in old colour 3 phase cables (red yellow blue and black)

no seals fitted is pathetic practice, and shoddy workmanship.

However can't say i see a problem with the old wiring - if you've got some spare and its in good condition, then use it - just because the colours have changed doesn't mean to say you should waste materials.

All street lighting cut outs are done this way they are supplied with jubilee clips, the bigger the cables the more of a sod they are to get into the cut out, I tend to work on them outside the lamp post and then slide them back in snd screw up the cut out, not forgetting to tag the door with earth conductor, as this is within an enclosure its an acceptable installation metod but I do tend to tape over the exposed sheath strands

All the lamp post cutouts I've ever seen have a twin swa gland plate built in to the base.

Furthermore, as the left hand switch will currently not do anything, I'd try the loose brown in here:
