Hi all,

Im due to be renovating a property in the near future which I am in the process of buying.

I am an Electrician but with limited domestic experience.

I have a query regarding the main incoming supply and how to tidy it up.

The incoming supply, main fuse and meter are fixed to a chunky board which looks pretty naff and sticks out a fair bit.

As it's the DNO supply I don't really have many options other than call them out and pay a large amount to move it. The other option I thought of was to box it in with a door for access.

The ideal place would be to move it to underneath the stairs (approx. 5 metres) but I have a limited budget and believe Western Power would want a hefty amount.

Does anyone else have any ideas or opinions?

Would be much appreciated.

Please see photos

Thanks

I've never known u/g joints done within a property. It just isn't done. Re the OP, the u/g joint could be done/ near where the existing u/g cable enters your property. Cable would be cut there (LIVE) and extended to where you require it. However there are restrictions. The best way would be into an OMB (outside meter box). I think the DNO will supply that nowadays and you could fit it. Any trenching required, you could also do that to keep cost down. At the end of the day. if it concerns you, now is the time to do it. You won't do it later after you have decorated. Check those prices again. Yours will be 1 Phase underground service alteration. I'm assuming ALL work on your land.

Just loked at WPd site.....YEP £600 ish. Could ask them round to look at hazardous unclipped cable. Try and split the cost if you do all the labouring. Can but try!

250 quid and expenses. The jobs as good as done.

How many breach joints do you want? They bump the price up a tad.

I was just about to say, I have a guy I know who works for a supply company who does these (tidy ups) on a regular basis as foreigners. He normally charges around the £200 mark. Might be worth asking electricians locally if they know anybody in your area. Beats getting ripped off!

1 thing for sure...fuseboards under stairs is a no no...always think of worst case...i know its sad but i dont like installing them there...
You may not like installing them there but assume for a second that that's where the service head comes in (as it did in the house I grew up in and no doubt hundreds of thousands of others up and down the country) the nearest alternative cupboard is more (in length of tails terms) more than three metres away.
What are you going to do? And more importantly, why?

For instance god forbid there was a fire that started at the fuseboard and you had to escape the house at night...you be trapped upstairs...now if i had a option were 2 put it..it would not be there...just think there could be a better area than underneath an escape...just an opinion

Smoke detector under the stairs will sort that :) (or course interlinked to all all over mains fed detectors)

So the plasterboard which forms a fire barrier above the CU, how long is it generally accepted that that will last?
You know those wooden stairs? How long are they going to last before they become untraversible (is that even a word lol)
You know those smoke detectors? How much smoke do they need before they start yelling GTF out at 100 db +?
Now, back to my question. The next available cupboard is longer (in terms of tail length) than 3 metres away. What are you going to do and why?
