Hi all,

Im due to be renovating a property in the near future which I am in the process of buying.

I am an Electrician but with limited domestic experience.

I have a query regarding the main incoming supply and how to tidy it up.

The incoming supply, main fuse and meter are fixed to a chunky board which looks pretty naff and sticks out a fair bit.

As it's the DNO supply I don't really have many options other than call them out and pay a large amount to move it. The other option I thought of was to box it in with a door for access.

The ideal place would be to move it to underneath the stairs (approx. 5 metres) but I have a limited budget and believe Western Power would want a hefty amount.

Does anyone else have any ideas or opinions?

Would be much appreciated.

Please see photos

Thanks

You may not like installing them there but assume for a second that that's where the service head comes in (as it did in the house I grew up in and no doubt hundreds of thousands of others up and down the country) the nearest alternative cupboard is more (in length of tails terms) more than three metres away.
What are you going to do? And more importantly, why?
Well as i live in ireland...its up to the power supplier(esb)...to remove from under stairs to other location...at the expence of the supplier..fuse boards not allowed under stairs and to be no higher than 2.1 mts off g.f

And pray tell where and in what book of regulations that little gem comes from
As I said, there will be hundreds of thousands of houses, shops, pubs, offices all over the UK where the service head comes in under the stairs. Are you seriously suggesting it is now incumbent upon the DNOs to shift them from a position where they have caused no problems for years to somewhere else? Not considering all the upheaval to the users of these properties?

Sorry bout that just new :/...u have vaild points ...smoke alarms should be mandatory...just finished a house ...where incoming supplies were looped underground from house to house...the esb had to foot the bill for a new supply in the porch and fix the neighbours...didnt go down too well as neighbours didnt speak to each other anyway

He did say Ireland, they do have different rules to is after all.
I'm not sure I agree with this one, but as I understand it they have a few sensible ideas over there too. I believe they have to install earth rods at the MET of TNCS supplies, hopefully someone can confirm this.

So if I go to your neck of the woods and I find a property with a service head under a flight of stairs I can make one call and they're duty bound by some legal provision somewhere to come and shift it?
Sorry mate but I'd like a link to that regulation,

Makes sense. It looks as if we are bringing in non combustible dist boards here in domestic dwelling because there seems to be quite a few dist board fires. Add to this installing them under wooden stairs. Seems like a good regulation to me.
