hi there just wondering if anyone can help me with this i dont have 2391 but i was testing through my now ex-employer! are elecsa my only option ive read they dont require 2391 aslong as your competent ! ive just wired an extension where the council sent there electrician at 1st fix and sending out again to check test results when finished i dont mind doing it this way but just thinking easier for future

Hi mate so napit dont charge you extra for pir approved if you have 2391

As far as I know they don't charge you extra for it anyway - that's one of there sales pitches - that it's all included in the one fee......domestic, commercial & industrial and PIR's with third party testing......all backed by NAPIT and done on their certs.

The only thing you pay extra for is 'Trustmark'.

I think the qualifications you have determine the kind of assessment you undertake - and you have to have 250,000 Professional Indemnity for PIR and 'Third Party'.

I got mine through them...they do a good deal.

maybe its changed not sure but napit allow alternatives to the 2391.

im of the opinion that anyone working as a spark should have it, and can think of no escuse why not to do the course, it is after all a short course and a decent qual to have.

Elecsa do not require 2391 to join their domestic installer scheme. They require it from the onset if you want to be assessed for, and carry out PIRs through them (notifying them of PIRs done). I am not entirely sure if that'd be NIC "Approved Contractor" equivalent though, there seems to be so many variables these days. Been reading about the NIC "Domestic PIR" scheme!

Not sure I agree with the last comment. There are and have always been areas where it is good to specialise and where it is good to have a broad range of skills. But I do agree that testing and inspection is vitally important. I also agree that the 2391 is a good course but I think that is mainly for domestic and commercial sparks. Industrial sparks depending on their area of expertise will have different testing regimes. My background in the mining industry meant I mainly was concerned with insulation and continuity and maybe phasing out. But this is due to the nature of fault diagnosis within the systems. Therefore although I was aware of the importance of impedance systems were in place to check the integrity. Therefore when I left this environment 2391 was extremely important to relate my knowledge to new environments.
I personally would have thought that most sparkies should have 2391 as a minimum if they were to be at QS level.

Yes the protocol was in the design and the testing before hand. And you would employ them with out 2391 if they demonstrated that they had the theoretical underpinning knowledge and they could fit in with your company. You could then send them on a 2391 course.
