We'll exchange Mansfield for it. Lived there for two years, still can't understand a bloody word. At least I can understand Trev and yourself, suppose working with Geordie's for 20+ years helps.
you had nothing but praise for it the other day Tony...

That’s so very true Geordie.
They were all pit fitters, nothing fazed them no matter what went wrong.

It rubs off. I had the same shift partner for 15 years we had to learn each others job to survive on shifts. He would be sorting electrical faults while I was belting 7 bells out of a bit of kit. It came down to who was nearest went to the job.
Officially I was in charge, not too sure about that.

All ex miners have my full respect.

We hear a lot about Members of Parliament being a tad dishonest and perhaps workshy. Well my MP is an ex colliery fitter who was on the front line during the strike and - like everyone else - lost his job.

Did he become a Benefits Scrounger? No, he trained to be a Carer and worked in residential care homes and that's one of the hardest jobs going.

Recently, he underwent a double knee replacement to put right the damage caused to them from his years in the pit.

Did he go on the sick? No, he took his laptop and papers into hospital with him and with an aide at his side continued with his work. He was even sending e-mails to me from his hospital bed!

Can you imagine any of these Eton educated toffs showing that amount of dedication??

You trying to confess something ....

I confess to being on good terms with my MP and using him to take-up matters that I have issues with - which is what MPs are for.

One of these things I have put him onto is the Electrical Trainee and the scams. He's very interested in that and asks "How the hell can anybody learn a trade in five weeks??" So, he's on our side.

Another one he's taken on board is the so called Gagging Law which is a threat to freedom of speech.

There are many people in this country who all have a moan and grumble about the the way things are and I'm one of them BUT I take it a step further and try to DO SOMETHING about it!

Writing / phoning or e-mailing my MP is one of those ways.

Right here goes ...

I myself am half way through a short course, always been interested, always done my own remedial work at home etc (checked and tested by a qualified electrician). I do not for one second think that once I step out of the college with my nice piece of paper, that I am competent to go and completely re-wire a member of publics house etc etc
I have been offered a job as an electrcians mate for when Ive gained the paper qualifications, and he has told me I will be starting from the bottom up , no fast-track because Im a friend, and not to expect to be left to do bigger jobs for at least 2 years.
He knows Im more than capable, but wants it doing the correct way. Im happy with this as its the best way to learn.
Do you experienced guys/girls think this is an ok way into the industry, or will you still see me as a Electrical Trainee.

What paperwork qualifications, ....you meaning the supplementary open book 2382?? lol!!

Well after even after 2 years with your mate, you will still have no core or meaningful electrical qualifications to your name, ....So what do you think??

Guess I kind of asked for that!!
Forgot to mention I will still be studying for further Quals in addition to the "open book" ones, along side working as a mate.
I didn't mean to infer that I would be fully qualified on leaving the college, I know I would be far from it.

Hi Jimmy, what made you choose the fast track route over going to college in the evenings for example?, I know it can be hard when working so that's why I chose evenings twice a week, while I work as an sparkys mate and I've done nearly a year already

Unfortunately with working long hours, and no really local colleges that carry the correct courses, would mean having to finish work early (which the boss shot down pretty sharpish) to travel to college to start on time. Tie that in with kids at home, it just wasn't a feasible plan.

What college?? ...You mean a rip-off training centre!!

So why did you not take the local college route to start with, at least then you could have taken on a core course (2365, 2357, 2357/NVQ etc), with meaningful qualifications on completion. And depending on the type of work your mate takes on, maybe even able to complete the NVQ 3 too!!

Aye, that's what I meant ...

As explained I did want to go the local college route, but circumstances deemed this not possible (as explained above).
2365 is part of the rip off course as its replaced the old 2330. And yes I would be working towards NVQ level 3 2357 is one of the courses I will be taking once I start with him.
I kind of understand you not liking our sort, but for some its the only way in. And as stated before I am not using it as a fast-track method, just a more viable one. My mate has just as much distain for Billy "know it all" Bodger as you.
