Can anyone give some advice on installing downlights please.

Once all the holes are cut, do you lift floor boards above so you can get cables through joists?

Yeah, the easiest way is to lift the floor boards up. there may already be holes in the joists that other cables are going through, if there is enough space you can use them but be carefull of how many you put through a hole (grouping factor). If you have to cut your own the regs say use this formula: Max diameter of hole should be 0.25 x joist depth. Holes on centre line in a zone between 0.25 and 0.4 x span. Basically you should be able to drill a 20mm hole through the centre of the joist, this will fit a few 1.5mm cables.

hope this help mate.

What power are the lights? 12v or 230v?

Pull up the floor boards is the best way. The 17th edition regs say the hole must be a max diameter of 0.25 x joist depth, Holes on centre line in a zone between 0.25 and 0.4 x span, Holes in the same joist should be at least 3 diameters apart. Basically cut a 15 to 20mm hole in the centre of the joist or use holes that are already there. What voltage are the lights 12v or 230v? and where are you putting them?:D

oh and your d/lighers have to be fire rated, sound rated & moisture rated as well from what I can remember. can anyone else refresh my memory on that?

when they're being put in the bedrooms where they're be in the loft area, you'll need to cut back the insulation & boards surrounding them and keep them away from joists, like 100mm from the centre of your d/ligher (depending on the size of the d/lighter).

You do not HAVE to install fire rated spots if they are going below a room of the same house (compartment).

The only time you do need to use them is if you are breaking the barrier between compartments (integral garage or flats above).

ALL SELV down lights are notifiable, whatever room they are in.
