Hi everyone,

I would very much appreciate your feedback/comments regarding this electricial install to help my cousin who has been ripped off and potentially could have put her life at risk!

She has recently had new decking fitted in the back garden and a family friend of hers who I kind of know put in the electrics for the outside lighting. This kid has being doing electrics since leaving school (approx 10years) and I know the firm he served his time with and I have come accross his work before!

He has installed outside lights to the decking in 1.5mm and took the feed straight from a kitchen socket under the sink and cut the earth out. He's then run it to an outside two gang switch (to which only one gang was needed) he then took the feed out of the switch in 2.5mm and fed every metal* light fitting reducing the cable size to 1.5mm then back to 2.5mm. He has cut off every earth at every connection point terminated in connectors and left them out in the open...yes in the open! He has made so many connections in connector blocks and failed to connect the earths from the fittings.

I had to go round earlier to see for myself as I did not believe that he had done such disgusting work when my cousin told me. I have asked for her permission to put these photos up and would like some feedback off other electricians.

I have uploaded some photos to show you how bad this install is.

Thanks

I've seen some shoddy work but this is some of the worst.
The person who done it has obviously not got a clue. But surely they must know electric is dangerous? So therefore they have shown a compete disregard for anyone's safety. They want locking up. It's just as selfish as drink driving!
Oh no....electricity isnt potentially dangerous any more....RCDs have seen to all that.....:jester:

That is a good analogy, and this goes way beyond the usual crappy work we sometimes shake our heads at.
I'm sure that if the poor MP who lost her Daughter was to see this, there would definitely be something done about this guy.

He will not be prosecuted for the standard of work

Not strictly true. If his standard of work has the potential to cause serious injury or harm then he may be prosecuted under the Health and Safety act for leaving a potential AND serious hazard brought about via his incompetence. Unfortunately it won't fall under the Health and safety at work at 1974 and HSE don't usually get involved with domestics but work like this chap has done they will certainly show an interest because of it's seriousness. This is where the IEE regulation fall flat on there face as they are not mandatory and therefore cannot take some one to court for not following them. However they may be referred to in a court of law brought about by a higher hierarchy such as the HSE.

seriously this so called sparky hasnt a clue or doesnt care even if he had it on a RCD it wouldnt work it needs a earth and special location
ok i have heard all this before !!!
many years i visited electricians for their assessments and they would show me photos or tell me so and so done this and that and yes if it was in front of me i would report it straigth away but when i tell the electricain to report it they say oh i dont want the bother
either dont complain or report it this what is shown is a life threatening example bit of rain little kid and electrics makes for a distaster

Hi, I do hope you have disconnected this installation. not only is an atrocious install it is extremly dangerous as no earths have been connected under fault conditions whoever touched one of the light fittings would become the route to earth consequentially suffering a severe electric shock especially in wet conditions as is quite likely being an outdoor install. Is this so called electrician actually qualified and is he part p registered, did he issue any paper work this type of work is part p notifyable. This person should be reported who knows how many other installs he has done like this. It is a ÂŁ5000 fine to carry out electrical work without the proper qualifacations and being part p registerd. your cousin has had a lucky escape.
