Good job they were wearing the correct PPE! Do we know what happened to them?

What correct PPE? Never mind the intense heat, the flying shrapnel would have cut them to ribbons! The chance of survival would be remote.

A colleague of mine got caught by a 440V arc flash, it took months for the NHS to patch him up. I had to repair the collateral damage. Lumps were bitten out of the panel isolator.

He died, that was his daughter he was with, they show that video to us when we're training or doing safety briefings! I do this stuff day in day out and that video gives you massive respect for what you're working with!

Yeah when it starts to hiss that's when you give it some welly, could have been broken insulators, ionisation, acetylene build up or a combo of a few things! Not good

i got it off live leaks news and it dosn't come with any background other than what you see, but what ive found out is they were both killed the first from the obvious and the second from the smoke, it was at the Ecospetrol refinery in columbia USA over a year ago and although it may not have saved him he wasnt wearing the appropriate grade 4 protection for said job but had he been he would probably still have choked to death from the highly toxic fumes as was the fate of his collegue.

The problem with a situation like that is finding the cause, there’s sod all left!

The failure we had in post #13 I found the cause lay on top of the OCB tank, a mouse! It was a bit crispy and crunchy.

It’s a shame to hear he had his daughter with him.
I’ve taken my son to work with me, one of the last jobs of the day was to re-energise the 11KV system. He was near tripping over his bottom lip when he got told to sit in the pick up while I racked the OCB in, he cheered up a bit when I allowed him to remotely close it. Even though the OCB was behind a triple brick wall and double blast doors he could still hear the clatter as it closed. Normally I’d have closed it locally.

If you look at the blast doors there is an hole for racking in the breaker, they were taking short cuts and also the gear he wears is approx level 2 where as he should have looked more like a space suit level 4, the stories on this are varied and different even claims he survived but its told he died for more impact in colleges but knowing copper expands 60,000 times when vapourised and guessing the temps are 30,000'c and duration was several seconds i believe it would have taken his life wearing what he had on.

The blast doors I was referring to were ¼” thick steel fireproof doors.

I see what you mean about the racking hole in the door. That would have been better than nothing. The design is that the blast should be directed backwards

(A mate went in to work with on a call out, he got very twitchy when he followed me in to the sub. 5 blast doors to go through, he jumped every time I unlocked one. he was even worse when we left. He’d just come out of Lincoln prison!)

Why would anyone want to do that for a job, It looks and sounds a very dodgy job to be doing. Are they on mega bucks or something
I,m nowhere near tony,s level but have had some hairy jobs and think I can answer your question NO everyone thinks you earn mega bucks but for the potential risks involvedit,s peanuts as you have seen when stuff goes wrong on that scale it,s usually half a day out with the undertaker.we do what we do because we like our jobs and if we didn,t then who would?
