isolation required??

Hope this post isn't as contraversial as my last one!!

Just been to do a board change and found that the oven cable has been taken straight from the oven terminals to the consumer unit..this was done about a year ago by a Napit electrician. Reading the on-site guide I take this as unacceptable..but I'd just like someone to comfirm this??

Using the MCB is permissible, but in my eyes bad practice.

IMO, he is using the MCB for isolation. whilst there is no requirement for an oven to have local isolation, i would consider this bad practice inas much as the MCB only isolates the line and is not double pole.

MCB is permissible but in my opinion a isolation point should be near the appliance and cover the live and neutral (but that is only my opinion as i am old school)

Double pole isolation should be mandatory on devices such as heaters, cookers and showers - no, ifs or buts.

osg states that 'all current using equipment requiring control shall be controlled by a switch' - and the reg's permits the use of circuit breakers for functional switching purposes. so technically, the napit bloke hasn't done anything wrong; but i'm with murdoch - it's shoddy, lazy work.

all appliances should have local isolation regardless of the regulations IMO, they are the minimum standard and I cannot imagine a electrician installing a cooker circuit without a isolator lol, it seems ridiculous to me to not install a double pole switch, but hey this is EF lol

..and while we're on the subject of the Napit electrician..I asked the customer if she had the EIC for the oven circuit..she handed me a cert she said she had been sent from the council, all it said on it was that there had been some part p work done in the kitchen and by who..no eic no shedule of insp. Is this the napit way, i'm with elecsa and been told i have to provide the eic to the customer.

OSG appendix H4 seems to ask for a switch not more than 2m away.
Unless I'm mis-reading it.

If they have run a new circuit from CCU then the person ordering the work should have been issued with a EIC and a copy given to the customer
but I live in a council house were a EICR of sorts was done by there contractor and i havnt been given a copy
it wouldnt have been worth the paper as he was here an hour tops and only did Live tests and as for inspection wasnt uch of that going on lol

the paperwork you have been given may be a building completion certificate possibly but could just be council informing them of the work thats been done

and they should have fitted a DP cooker control unit its just lazy and rough but complies

Pretty sure a local isolation point must be installed within 3 metres to the appliance according to bs7671.

the R1 + R2 test Sequence for radial final circuits * Securely isolate the supply . Disconnect any bonding connections that could affect the test readings . Make a temporary connection at the CCU between the phase and cpc of the circuit to be tested. Using a low ohms continuity test meter measure the resistance between phase and cpc at each point on the circuit also confirming polarity. The R1+R2 is the reading taken at the furthest point on the circuit . Re-connect any bonding conductors disconnected for the test . Remove the temporary connection at the ccu .

I agree with everyone else,im doing a rewire and it has not entered my mind to miss out on a cooker and shower isolator and using the circuit breaker as means if isloation,but for your consumer unit upgrade if you note it in the comments box on your EIC as no local isolator and offer the option to your client thats all you are required to do,so you will be fine.

unless there's more than one circuit that's going to be interrupted, 5.1.1 ii is covered.
