Just met a fella on site who has a grade card and a NVQ level 3 and he has never done any electrical work ever on site in his life. He did a 6 week course which cost 6k and at the end they gave him a grade card with "Electric" written on it in bold red, he is now going to apply for his gold card. He walked onto a site Monday with a pair of boots on and this card and admitted straight away he knew nothing at all about installation work but felt he was qualified, he is a really nice fella by the way, however regardless of that, the fact is he is on a large commercial site sent to install electrical installation work without any site experience at all and possible access to a gold card after 6 weeks at college disturbed me--------------------------thoughts everyone?

That's a weird one. The poor guy obvs hasn't got a clue and has genuinely been conned by a very good conman/woman. But all I can say is that he is part to blame as he clearly didn't do his research on the industry's education system and was prob desperate for employment.

Has he got an NVQ level 3 or a level 3 technical certificate? Does he realise there's a difference or was he just sat in front of a series of exam papers to regurgitate the information he was just given, then presented with some certificates, one of which had 'level 3' on it?

Yeah i cant see how he has gained an NVQ3 in 6 weeks aswell

Good point, if I see him again I will ask him

There's no way a C&G external verifier would sign off a batch of NVQ folders that were done in a mock situation. If that is the case then something seriously wrong has gone on !

Which training provider did he use ? has he actually got a NVQ3 or something that he has been told is one ?

I'm thinking the reality is that he has a cert that is "something like a NVQ in many respects and almost nearly equivalent to one...sort of"

Just goes to show that my fears of these NVQ'S being open to abuse isn't off th mark at all!! All these back door merchants have got to be shut down, the sooner rather than later.

As for our Emma's suggestion that the general opinion that standards are rising, ...what else can she say?? Anything else would prove beyond a shadow of doubt that her organisation is surplus to requirements as it would have shown that after all these years of operation, it hasn't done a thing to improve anything. Which by the way is the real truth of the matter, and if anything has been instrumental in lowering of standards across the board!!! Money and her high flying commercial position/post within this organisation is the ''ONLY'' thing she will ever be interested in!! If that requires lying through her teeth with a smile, then so be it, ....she Will!!

I despair.

I’m now waiting for the 5 day “become an industrial maintenance electrician” course.

They are running 3Ph appreciation, how long before they go the whole hog? The scams haven’t got their foot in the door there, yet.

Thankfully, the wanabe’s had to get past the company grumpy git.
No indentures, qualifications and either verified experience or references, “please shut the door on your way out.”
A JIB card just didn’t cut the ice.
