Just met a fella on site who has a grade card and a NVQ level 3 and he has never done any electrical work ever on site in his life. He did a 6 week course which cost 6k and at the end they gave him a grade card with "Electric" written on it in bold red, he is now going to apply for his gold card. He walked onto a site Monday with a pair of boots on and this card and admitted straight away he knew nothing at all about installation work but felt he was qualified, he is a really nice fella by the way, however regardless of that, the fact is he is on a large commercial site sent to install electrical installation work without any site experience at all and possible access to a gold card after 6 weeks at college disturbed me--------------------------thoughts everyone?

Thankfully, the wanabe’s had to get past the company grumpy git.
No indentures, qualifications and either verified experience or references, “please shut the door on your way out.”
A JIB card just didn’t cut the ice.

Had similar during the interview day on my current job application. About 16 turned up and 4 were sent home after the paperwork checks before we went on to the interview & trade tests. Another check was made later when I was offered the job when they wanted to copy my papers for their files.

Doesn't take long before the cracks appear.. This fella won't even know what abit of cable tray is .....who employed this guy ?? Feel sorry for him but don't cut corners because you'll look stupid when someone asks you to go grab something

im not saying the jib is the best thing since slice bread but its a great bench mark for the industry it most certanily isnt a joke tony and ive found out in my time the people who slag it off are the ones that cant obtain a jib card ie not enough qualifications

I never needed a JIB card due to the nature of my work so don’t assume I couldn’t get one.

It’s something we’ll never know:
A: I’m retired.
B: I was never a contractor.
C: why waste my money?

I still love my profession and do not take kindly to the way it has been watered down.

I seriously doubt it was an NVQIII, it's not possible to be awarded that qualification without actually being employed and working. You need to produce a portfolio and have witness testimonies and onsite evaluations (well you do up here). It's more likely that he's just got a level 3 C&G qualification

but even so...level three in a few weeks...

you still need the underpinning knowledge that you will only get shadowing someone on site...

5 weeks....:nonod:

its just not on..............

What do you mean 'a few weeks'.....PAT testing is level three and it's a half day course! Anybody that is an employer, or works in recruitment, should have a good knowledge of the current qualification system and should be able to recognise real qualifications. Just for example, which would you prefer: City & Guilds level III Inspection & Testing (2391) or City & Guilds level III Inspection & testing of Electrical Equipment (2377)???

Me thinks that we should be venting our frustrations at the City and Guilds decision makers!!!!
