JIB graded me as labourer!

Just been graded as a labourer. Iv got all parts of 16th edition up to level 3 and have AM1. I sent all my certificates and proof what i have achieved. Iv studied 3 years full time at college and didnt do my NVQ3 because i was not a day release scheme. Will i have to do 17th edition to gain NVQ3?

When these NVQs first arrived on the scene, they were considered by industry, not to be worth the paper they were written on, They only wanted to see indentured papers and G&G certs... And that wasn't that long ago either!!! ...How times change!!! lol!!!

I agree that when I did my training the NVQ was just a cert and the main deal was pt 1+2 and the C but they have been around for a while, mine was 1988.

As i remember, the original NVQs were brought in when there was 4 million unemployed and the government at the time wanted to give these numbers a chance to re-train to basic levels, in various trades and crafts.

Like all these things that are not thought through too well from the off, it didn't work too well, with most finishing these schemes being little more than ''semi skilled'' but with NVQs saying ''Skilled''!!! Now look at what has happened to our industry, from all the ill thought-out schemes that have followed!! What's going to be the next inovation to further degrade the title of ''Electrician''???

Im just waiting to see if the JIB grade me and as what! my old firm did not include all my quals on my old ecs card so i am trying to get them added, though old one was a gold card in safety systems. I have served an apprentiship have EITB and C+G in instrumentation from the 1980s 16th update C+G 2382-12 sub station permit with loa and loads of other vocational and product certs.
Now after reading this i dont expect any grading now!
I think too much is put on NVQ's, i have worked with some NVQ3 engineers who all ran at the thought of having to make off a pyro.... with the EITB training i had to make off and test all types of cable we was even shown lead and woven sheith cable as we would probably come accross it at some time and i have.....
There is now too much reliance on curent qualifications and those that have made this reliance need to realise that all the sparks with the new quals have been trained by us old boys some of who havent got a piece of paper to there name but are the first we all turn to for advice..

TThe only way to beat them is to stay up to date I got my 14th edition C&G approved SJIB card 2 years after my electricians card was issued and although I moved on to alarms,BMS HVAC controls,Building maintenance I always got up to date ie 15th then 16th then 17th because I found myself 2 years ago starting a small business although reading most of the posts the newer type quals seem to be up in the air.

do gold cards run out , years back after i finished 236 i was sent a gold card didnt even apply ! i think it said technician not sure , i stuck in a draw and forgot about it

As oldtimer says ,
its easier to just renew the card constantly , even during periods you dont need it , than to let it expire.

I have full city and guilds am1 am2 nvq level 3 so they just post mine back saying i need 2391 to be graded !

i will swap you my 2391 for your nvq3 i have 2360 /1/2 +17th + years of experiance marine electrician for fathers company they say i need nvq3?

i think the jib with there card structure thingy is mooving alot of would be or want to be comercial, industrial electricians to have to choose domestic .meaning more competition and more cost cuting in the domestic sector, therefore leading too eventualy i predict and see evidence every day on this forum evidence of dangerous situations in peoples homes.
