Don't do a lot of domestic myself but am rewiring my kitchen.
I don't really want a load of fused spurs above the work tops so looking at what ppl do usually when the same has been required?
Is it just sockets low down at the back of units or grid switching?

Thanks

By 'qualified' do you mean 'completed a Electrical Trainee domestic installer course'? Correct me if I'm wrong but judging by some of your latest posts I would hazard a guess as to this being your entry in to the trade. I only mention this because it would seem that even though the OP stated that he doesn't really carry out domestic electrical installation work, you have taken this to mean that he is not qualified (I'm guessing because domestic work is all you are used to)?? I however would take this to mean that he is qualified but works mainly in the commercial field.

My personal assumptuion is that the guy is more than competent to do what he is doing in his OWN kitchen and is purely looking for asthetic advice rather than electrical advice, therefore my suggestion is that giving out that asthetic advice based on your 'extensive experience' in the domestic field would be far more helpful than teaching a perfectly competent and more qualified man how to suck eggs.

Don't hate me, but it's aesthetics. I remember in my product/graphic design A-level everyone did the same. Anyway I'm off to spain for a fortnight, so, see ya later suckers

I was thinking about this the other day...

If a grid switch is on a ring then surely a 4G grid switch is just 4 spurs - when only one is allowed... Am I missing something?

Personally... I think fused spurs above a counter clutter the look - I always try to mount a socket in the adjacent base unit to the appliance - this way it's accessible.

Another thing about using an un-switched socket fed from a grid switch directly behind the appliance - what it the plug-top fuse blows?

It's my 1st post so be gentle... lol

A four gang grid isolator is four completely separate isolators in the same enclosure so its four spurs from four isolators which is perfectly acceptable.

If a fuse were to blow behind an appliance I think the best course of action would be to slide out the appliance and change the fuse.

Think you've been watching too many of these arty farty home improvement programs on the TV, where the presenters seem to forget that kitchens in most normal family homes, are not dealer show pieces but regularly used work stations. All this minimalistic crap in family kitchens renders these new expensive kitchens almost bloody useless as a working kitchen....

You echo my thoughts

I find that throwing away the fuctionality of the kitchen for decorative whims defeats the whole idea of why a dwelling has a kitchen in the first place
Maybe the minimal non functioning kitchen will eventually have food preparation frowned on
Anyone for a camp fire in the garden and some burnt toast

Since I got my multi fuel log and anything that'll burn burner installed last year or so, I've had free heat and cooked some decent munchies on it now and again.

Rubbish, I love my minimalist kitchen!

White walls, white floor, white ceiling, no units, no cooker, no sink, no appliances, just a nice minimalist grid plate hidden away in one of the corners! Perfection as Kevin McCloud would put it! I've no idea what the switches on the grid plate do as there's nothing to switch, but that's beside the point.

What I have is the absolute ideal room to dream up the fanciest of meals, who cares if those dreams can never come to life!?

I have usually had an open coal fire, later on a Parkray,Id used to love throwing some spuds on and letting them roast,
peel off the charcoal and enjoy, toast also tastes a lot better on an open fire

I have that dreaded gas contraption in a cupboard and I sure miss the real heat of coal and timber
i think I am jealous and perhaps I will get a wood burner stove and reopen that chimney they blocked up

Do it!!!
We used to spend a fooking fortune on gas, with the combi, a decent Vaillant as well.
I shoved up the flue liner up what chimney breasts there is, no flues in the attic, got about 6 foot of liner sticking out of the top of my roof. Works a treat! Free wood as well from the local hippy food store where they leave broken pallets out.
