evening guys, ive come across lighting in one room of domestic premises that has been supplied from the ring main at some point. the cable coming from the ring is 1,5mm which goes through the switch then on to the 2 x 12V down lights. This is on an EICR I`m doing. There is no chance at all of accessing under the floor boards as there is very expensive oak flooring down every where. I believe that from memory you can use a switched fused spur for functional switching. I could then put in a 5A fuse and the load side of the cable will be protected. My concern though is the piece of 1,5mm from ring to switch? your thoughts on this would be welcome. I see this as no different to taking a spur off the ring for an extra socket etc, or am I forgetting some thing?

Thing is to think about like has been mentioned is the method of installation when a busbar chamber is used, the amount of switch fuses connected to it supplying various kit is usually a lot on most chambers, I have seen a 32 amp switch fuse tapped off with 6mm2 tails to it before and the chamber 400 amps, puts it into perspective really, however that said code it a 3 or even a 2 if you like and be done with it all LOL, who cares it is only a cable and it is Friday, get a beer in you

Why is it when some one disagrees with an installation method it is Bad Practice or not Good Practice seems to be a very misused term and this thread is a good example of it's misuse

Just checked on my laptop bottom page Appendix 15 in BS7671, are you referring to the box that to the types of cable BS6044 Flat Twin and Earth?

Hi DJ
Just checked my BGB Appendix 15 Page 425 Fig 15A. Nowhere on that diagram does it state you can take a 1.5mm2 cable directly from the RFC to feed anything. I does however indicate that you could feed from the RFC providing you use a FCU fusing down to the load you wish to supply, providing you feed the FCU in 2.5mm2 and THEN proceed in 1.5mm2 cable as originally stated. The box you refer too states the type and sizes of cable to be used.
