This. And the other issue is if the lift equipment could do this. Last year we had to interface our alarm with 2 new lifts going into a building so that it would drop to the lowest floor that wasn't in fire and go out of service. They were using Orona lifts who had used two different controllers for the two lifts. One we could do it with, the other the only facility was literally just ground it and open the doors which they really weren't happy with!

Were the lifts on fire recall or Fire fighting lifts.
Fire fighting lifts are totally different and quite complex.

Fire recall. To be honest, I had no faith in the guys installing them neither did the site management.
The building owners had just had another building done and the lift was installed by 2 northern chaps who seemed to really know their stuff but these ones on the site in question were done by 2 foreigners who barely spoke English and had no respect at all for the site or residents there.

Nothing to do with the installation guys, the test engineer should have been able to wire in or programme fire recall, its quite basic.

Morning all. Thanks for the information, some very interesting and informative replies.
Always impressed by the level of knowledge on this forum.

I don't know much at all about fire systems and lifts. Just been thrown in at the deep end with somthing at work. I looked round the Internet
For info but couldn't find anything that explained it in an accessible way.

Hi,
My suggestion would be pop down to the local library and have a read of the British standards relating to lift installation, and then ask yourself the question are you competent to be carrying out such works..

As stated previously, there will be a written fire strategy on what is required on this building. You then need to work with the fire alarm & lift installation company to achieve this requirement.
The lift company will request X number of i/o units from the fire alarm, to be be zoned in the program....the lift company will program the software to suit the cause & effects required. You need to work with all involved.

Thing is he doesn`t need them, its your domain lift installation....his is to supply the correct i/o in the motor room, to a mutial cause & effects...

If theres a zonal fire system, at most the lifts will be required to stop at the exit floor (normally ground) or an alternate floor to be designated by the fire officer in case of fire at the exit floor. So the lifts will only require two signal ie two n/o or n/c volt free (dry) contacts.
Its quite simple really.

It’s time you got specialists involved for your own sake.

It is quite simple but the legal requirements aren’t.
