Hello everyone. I am a full qualified 17th edition electrician with about 10 years experience. I now want to set up on my own as a domestic electrician. Like i said i have nvq level 3 and 17th edition. I was just wondering is there any more qualifications or courses i need or should take? Any advice in general would be great. Thanks!

Hi Jurassic
You will not need to have a part p qualification you are fully qualified as you say although a testing certification would not hurt your portfolio. To join a scheme and not have to pay local building control a large portion of your profit you will need to have 1 or 2 recent installations available for inspection with all testing results and some schemes require at least initial verification and testing qualifications to be able to join.
Have a read of a few posts on here about the schemes requirements and how others have passed there assessments it may help shed a bit of light on the subject more And remember not all jobs will require building control notification.

I think that's very misleading and perpetuates the myth that part P is a qualification.

Building Regulations for Electrical Installations in Dwellings qualifications and training courses | City & Guilds - https://www.cityandguilds.com/qualifications-and-apprenticeships/building-services-industry/electrical-installation/2393-building-regulations-for-electrical-installations-in-dwellings#tab=information
So you had better tell City and Guilds that then! And it won't have much effect on me becuase I have that C&G qualification and I can put it up on here if you still beleive there is no such qualification. Although I will conced it is not just Part P. it does include all the other regs.

It's a worthless qualification. It is not a requirement of any of the schemes and as I said, simply perpetuates the myth that part P is a qualification. People do these courses in the mistaken belief that they are then able to 'sign off work'.
It may be a worthwhile means of learning about building regs with respect to electrical installation, but that is all.

So do i need to do this part p course or do i just contact NIC and they assess my jobs and then i can sign the documents off? Im even more confused now. Can someone just tell me what a domestic electrician has to do once hes done a job. Say a rewire?
It's simple mate.
1. Complete an Electrical Installation Certificate and hand it to the person ordering the work.
2. Notify Building Control. The only cost viable way to do this is as a member of a scheme (NICEIC/NAPIT/SROMA etc). Via their website each job is notified for a small fee and they send a BC cert to the client.
3. There isn't a 3.

So your first call is join a scheme.

How is that confusing?

Stroma is the cheapest, but niceic are the best known and recognised.

I would recommend stroma for a spark who has a good customer base already.

Nic may be better for setting up to give you an edge over competition For the above reasons.

I know I'm going to get some disagreeing with this post. And I admit stroma are getting bigger and more recognised and some customers haven't got a clue about schemes.
the difference in price is about ÂŁ180 ish.
