JIB rate is about £13 - £14 depending on grading and transport arrangements. I have always viewed that rate as an industry recognised "minimum wage"

The thing is a lot of people who are time served sometimes get paid off, they still have bills to pay and kids to feed and if that's all that's available at the time what would you prefer them to do, work or be on benefits?
Not that being on benefits automatically makes you a bad person.

If no spark would take the rates and they only had mates and DI applying, the rate will have to rise to get some decent skill on the job. I'm a subby, Where rates are a big thing as no holiday pay, etc. 8-10 pound an hour......... BIG NO NO

Yes rates are a big thing, sometimes you have no choice in order to put food on the table. I've had my share in the past of crap jobs on crap rates, none of them sparking because I wouldn't ply my trade for a stupid amount but if you have bills to pay sometimes you have to.

How dare anyone look down on someone for doing the right thing by his/her family!

Union, unite not really interested. In fairness it tough for them with all the temp work out there now, although wouldn't have beaten the besna without them. So standing together is the only way to bring it back.

I agree that not taking this crap is really the way forward but sometimes lads really do not have the luxury of being able to say screw that. If we all stood together then you're right, it wouldn't be an issue but there's always the ones who will say "I'll take this short term" and they'll always exist.
The tories used that attitude to beat the miners, "they're skint so they'll grovel" People like that are the real scum mate.

With most of the electrical work being done with self employed sparks now there is not much that can be done about it.
I am in favour of direct employment and getting everything you are due.

For the rates shown on the job adverts here are very insulting and I know several sparks who would not work for that as they are better of at home with the feet up and getting the rent and council tax paid for them and claiming any benefits they can get.

of all the electricians operating in this country i would imagine no more than 5% , if that , are in a union , so unions clearly arent going to provide the solutions.

its simple supply & demand economics - theres more sparks than there is work , so it drives down the wages
making it a political rant is pointless and narrow sighted.

Especially as the big lads only employ SE subbies. What's the point of being unioned up if you're SE?. I'm not saying it's right, it's just the way it is.

Yeah, I put my feet up when I can't find a decent wage. Although I'd like to make a point - Never been on the dole in my life, quite happy to sink into my savings ha!

and why should all the sparks without the luxury of a financial cushion turn down work paid at a lower rate just to abide by your ill-informed principles ?
