Can the main earth be run on the outside of a building from the MET to the consumer unit clipped direct?

Would it not need some form of protection

Black plastic conduit may well provide adequate protection, but all the regulations relevant to the particular installation will need to be complied with. Unfortunately if you are looking for a reg which states ' main earth wires shall not be clipped direct externally' you wont find it.

If it is something you are planning to install then I would suggest some outdoor-rated conduit. Black usually is, but you may find other colours are also UV stabilised.

It might not need protection strictly by the regs, but you have to take in to account the risk of physical damage from accidents like wheely bins knocking it, or the local scroats nicking it as it looks like enough copper to buy a beer.

Black Plastic conduit or would it have to be metal conduit its for my flat it would be at minimum two meters from the ground

no problem just to clip it direct onto the wall. or could get british gas to just throw it from one point to the meter, just 20ft.of 10mm Gn/Y dangling.

Lol?

Its the main earth thats 16mm i have sorta understood that anything above 4mm can doesnt need mechanical protection even if its the main earth going to the MET in an out house type building where the incoming is

But conduit couldn't hurt right ?

You would treat it as a TT installation.
