It's customers like this one that you don't need. Slaging off all the trades etc, walk away I say.

This may seem a daft question, but has the customer unplugged the unit for a few minutes and then plugged it in again to ensure it does a proper reset?

Some electronic items can benefit from the basics!

This is a good point, has she called Sky herself see if anything can be done over the phone? Could be a momentary glitch, they do happen on sky+ boxes especially with the bad weather recently.
And if she has tried these things don't touch it at all yourself than she could use that against you make it look like you've made it worse.

Some of the comments on this thread slagging off the customer are grossly unfair........the OP says the sky box failed on the day he carried out an RCD test........OK, We know this is almost certainly either coincidence or possibly just one of those things.
But look at it from her point of view....Sky working fine...Electrician comes in and does some tests.....Sky box not working fine....What would you think?...imagine you had a safety check carried out on your CH system, working fine before....After the guy leaves you notice the boilers packed up,completely knackered....he just turned off the power and gas to it for a short while, so you say..."Oh well, cant be anything to do with him,I'll just have to stump up for a new one then"....yeah,right.
This is something everyone comes up against eventually,I have....Unfortunately if you want to keep your reputation intact walking away is not an option...Hell has no fury like a customer who feels they have been wronged, word gets around.....Best to discuss the situation with them, explain that you are confident that this is pure coincidence as all the tests you carried out do is switch off the power,no different to unplugging the thing,or a random power cut...offer to pay a percentage of costs incurred as a goodwill gesture.Hopefully common sense will prevail...

Dont ignore the problem, communication is the key, if it cant be resolved or common ground cant be found a complaints procedure will need to be put in place, if you speak to your scheme provider they may be able to act as a middle man.

there is a chap they no going round 2moz but he is not from sky the problem with this woman is she tries to play all trades off each other but we are all mates so we tell each other what she says she is going to have a big shock 2moz because the kitchen fitter is going to pull out because how she treats him

She has not called sky but instead getting a man that she knows??? She tells the builder first (that your prob working for) that she will take you to court? She tries to play trades off one another. And the kitchen fitter is going to pull put because of the way she treats him. Sorry but I don't think your reputation will get any harm, don't think a person like this will have many friends and the ones she has will probably take her for what she is. Stick to your guns mate. I'm in the corner with ukpablo and Durham. CHANCER. Not saying that the complaint procedure should not be used, I just think she is trying to use you. People automatically think that if they mention court that you do anything and pay up. If this was me and I KNEW that I did not break it and KNEW what thus women is like and KNEW I can prove in court (even if it means rigging up a board with a sky+ box plugged in and rcd tested infront of the judge) I would tell her to take a running jump. Reputation is one thing, pride of yourself is another.

If the OP is certain she is a chancer then fine, tell her to go forth.......if her sky box really did pack up on the day of testing (regardless of the reason)I think it is perfectly understandable that she feels she has a grievance ,and it would be best to take that into consideration when deciding how to proceed.

i have contacted the niceic today to explain the situation to them and i have got there full backing i can understand why she has feels like i have caused the damage but to rant and rave at me while i am tring to explain is not acceptiable this is a customer that i will never deal with again.
thanks for all your responces i really appreciate your responces and feel like i am in the right and sticking to my guns
cheers

If you did the auto rcd and tripped the breaker 4 times in quick succession surely you could damage a sky+ or a sky HD box as the hard drive will be still spinning as you are turning on and off the power. In this case SKY will charge ÂŁ60 and replace the unit as other members on here have said.

In my opinion it could be better to just pay this to the customer (after seeing the bill from Sky) for 2 reasons:

1, Most people with this type of attitude have plenty of free time to file an official complaint, which even though unjustified, can still cause you a bit of unwanted aggravation.

2, Most importantly, people with this type of attitude will spend the next 5 years bad mouthing you to every person she meets, for the sake of ÂŁ60 and being polite and overly helpful you will probably get some good press from her in the future which may get you more work.
