measured 240 v on neutral to earth when disconnected neutral leg off light circuit

What circuit were you actually measuring when you disconnected the light circuit? ....... sorry for the vague response but the question was vague so Im narrowing down options!

Best turn the lights off, that might help or you could knock the breaker off for the lights. Grabbing hold of the neutral whilst standing on a step ladder with a coffee in your hand is NOT recommended.

If you disconnect the neutral of a lighting circuit from the cu when the power is still on, then the current will flow through the lamps and the neutral will equal the same potential as the live side.

totally wrong!!!!! there is NO current flow, therefore zero volt drop. that's why you get the 240V on the disconnected neutral

Thats what i was trying to get across, if you do not touch it then there will be no volt drop, but if you do touch it then big volt drop.
