Hi Guys,

I have prolonged doing my 17th edition (2382) update since completing my 2330 level 3 last year.

To my horror it has now gone from a 1 day course at ÂŁ150 to a 3 day ÂŁ444 course since the start of the year.

Does anyone know of a cheaper option????

Cheers

no basically i don't need to do the full 17th edition, as i completed my 2330 level 3 early last year (no i don't have the 16th). but to be honest its a bit of a joke because i was taught to 17th edition anyway. there have only been a couple of amendments since then. which also means i have to now spend another ÂŁ60-ÂŁ70 on the amended green regs book.

Ahh!

If you had the 16th with Amendment 2004, it was a one day course for the 17th (2008), if it was earlier, ie. 16th (2001) you had to do the full 17th course, but since the 17th 1st amd (2011) I believe you had to do the full course.

Iam sure others on here will correct me if Iam wrong.

yeah i messed up i think, because it was 1 day before january this year. to be honest the only reason i haven't done it yet is because i am actually in work and have been since college. although now i am looking to progress and i will need it to become registered with a body so that i can sign my own work off.

if you completed your 2330 last year then you are 17th already surely? as the 17th came out in 2008.
there is no requirement to do any update courses for the new ammendments.

yeah i know mate this is what i thought. i mean i've spent over ÂŁ2000 the last 3 years doing my level 2 and level 3 2330. and now i need to pay another ÂŁ444. but to be honest even when searching for jobs, not many people ask for the 2330. they ask for the 2382 (17th Edition). I was under the impression you needed this as a minimum to become niceic, elecsa etc, etc...

Hi Jase,
how can you need to do a 17th update if you qualified 17th anyway?

Unless he has a certificate specifically for BS7671, he will not be allowed on one of the scams, as they will ask to see this (a tick box), whether he is trained at that level or not, this is a requirement (some will say the only requirement).

Unless someone knows different ?

there is no requirement to have any formal qualifications just to display a correct level of your competence
BS7671 itself does not require any formal qualifications, just competence.
As long as you have a copy of BS7671
on site guide
a copy of the memorandum of the electricity at work regulations
a copy of building regulation document part p
an understanding of the building regs
a calibrated test meter for IR continuity EFL and rcd testing
any other paperwork that is asked for ie PL ins cert, complaints procedure, contract of work
correctly filled in test certs to show an understanding of how to fill them out
and can show the correct level of understanding of wiring procedures

Hi Jase,
Not disagreeing with you at all re: competency, but if you look at all of the scheme requirements they all state BS7671 as a minimum.

I think elecsa was one of the easier one to register with, only requiring an up to date BS7671, or updating within the first year.
Napit I think you either needed the 2391 or their version of it within the first year on top of the BS7671.
And the NIC has a couple of different grades all requiring different qualification levels depending on which scheme you register on.

I will happily stand to be corrected on this point, but as far as Iam aware that is what I was led to believe

qualifications contractors will need to show proof that they have an acceptable
electrical qualification. If a contractor does not have a 17th edition qualification at an initial assessment, then it may be acceptable to obtain it within 12 months providing that he/she can demonstrate a suitable understanding of the requirements.
existing members must obtain this by their first surveillance assessment after 31st december 2010.

This is taken from the Elecsa registration guidance page

Yep thats what i thought. It was the elecsa website i saw this on.

Anyways today i spoke to a private training centre in harlow, and rather than pay ÂŁ444 to do a 3 day course and the new 2382-12 (17th edition) exam, i can pay ÂŁ108 just to do the exam only. I dont feel i need to do the 3 day course as i have recently done my level 3 and have been working in the trade for four years nearly. I will probably pay an extra ÂŁ20 odd for a revision cd from them. I'm quietly confident I should pass, as its a 60 question online multiple choice and your allowed your regs book ;0))
