Hi guys, i have just moved into a bungalow which is really old. All electrics and all are ancient. With a new consumer unit with rcd, mcb or rbo's, how do you work out the circuits? For instance, in a 2 storey house, you have a ring main for upstairs and down stairs. But how do you seperate them in a bugalow?

Hi Mate,
I would call in a qualified electrician to come and test the bungalow electriucs first, as you mention the electrics are really old, do not try to connect them to a new consumer unit, you will be opening a can of worms and probably get hurt in the process ( if you dont know what you are doing ).

thanks for the advice sav. I am definately not going to try and connect it. I have not got a clue. But what kind of CU should i buy

IMHO you shouldn't buy anything without the input of a competent person. Yes you could go to Wickes and buy a heap of xxxx but how would help you.

Replacing a CU and doing the necessary tests, upgrades, certs and LABC stuff isn't as straightforward as you may think.

To be honest Mutley, the last person who wanted to impose a "make" of CU on me said they wouldn't pay more than £60 for the CU. The price I quoted for the complete change did not seperate the parts out and the guy went with my price.

Doing the job I found a few issues, these were done as extras and the customer was happy.

You need to get a sparky or 2 in and get estimates for the job, not just the box.

If you can find someone who is willing to fit a cu that you buy who will be responsible if it is faulted when the tests are carried out !

Will you be happy to pay for the extra time etc of removing the faulted goods and then you going back to electrofix to try and exchange it !
.
IMHO I would take advice from who you get a quotes from and let them supply and be responsible for everything that they qoute to do!

Hi Mutley,
if you need someone to do an inspection or quote then i'm in west ewell so would be willing to have a look for you.
Ty.
your able to get materials and CU as cheap as us and i'm able to put you on the right track.
