got inducted at a new job today its an underground job in london

My agency they told me my rate when i got there and filled out all the forms i got pulled to the side by one of the companies supervisors doing the induction...because my Gold card was so fresh he asked me how long i have had it i told him 6 months he said I'm afraid your just an 'advanced mate' you will be dropped £20 a day on your rate

I'm absolutely gutted thats 100 pounds a week i'll be down just got a mortgage thats the last thing i need. after all the hard work i have done to get the gold card i am gutted i am not getting the rate.

I've been working as a mate since 1998 I've done my time :(

is this common practise with electrical firms a deduction when you just come out of your time?????

so you go into a pub for an afternoon snecklifter because you got no work on,and take offence with people who are in the pub, because theres no work...just an observation mate..
But I arn`t in there day in day out....and as i said i know they are. Plus i arnt out all day n all like them....got better things to do with my time......

And theres agency work n stuff....foxes bscuits always set on at this time of year together with factory work but they moan that the wages are crap or they cant stand production work.....then i would say this....go to college and get a trade/skill that folk will pay for and get the self respect that comes with it n all.......

i know man,but its a sweeping statement,i dont like people who milk the system either, but i wouldnt deny them an afternoon pint and a woody..
Wasn`t tarring all with the same brush mate give me some credit will you...but I know those I was refering to otherwise I wouldn`t have made the statement i did.....and i know the town i live in isn`t unique this "phenomenon" can be found up and down the country.....

For God's sake, I'm really getting cheesed off with the way that some firms are treating labourers/mates/apprentices or blokes who are fresh out of their time. I was talking to an apprentice today - who happens to be the Grandson of a drinking buddy. He has to travel FOUR intercoursing hours a day to and from his job, without so much as a penny in travel expenses. He then has to do a ten hour day. All for the princely sum of eighty quid a day. He's a third year student, and probably the most knowledgeable and committed kid that I've ever met in my life. And to top it all off, some of the sparks on the job just treat him like excrement. Yet a good pal of mine is desperate for a decent apprentice, which I mentioned to this kid, but he is determined to stick things out where he is!!! Apprentices/mates come in for a lot of stick on this forum - the same as they do in a works canteen. Yes, a lot of so-called kids now adays, do tend to just coast along, or ain't cut out for the job, BUT if this kid is an example of the future of our industry, then I think that we need not worry. Honestly boys, this kid has a level of maturity way beyond his age. Its quite sad really, his dad died when he was fourteen, his mum is an alcoholic, and he has basically looked after her, and his younger sister since then. He wanted to join the Army, but put it off to look after them for God's sake. I pray that something really really good happens to this kid one day soon.

im not slating you man,im just saying that you could view any situation in that way
No probs mate. I don`t come in here for arguments....the worlds too full of that anyway....But when work was scarce end of last year I went about getting someone to give me an apprenticeship so I could learn this trade in a proper and recognised manner. Now, a lot of sparkys turned me down with the inevitable words "works not there mate" or stuff like that but you keep on and eventually I found someone who would give me a chance. I have never been late or knocked for this man (which is normal behaviour) anyway so If you look and try.....you WILL find something and this is what i would say to anyone who wants to get on..........

Yer but people like you mate and the kid that I mentioned in my post, seem to be the exception, rather than the rule these days unfortunately. But you have nothing to prove to anyone on this forum mate because you have proved that you know your stuff. Indeed the only fault that I can find with any of your posts is that you support a crap football team. But we all have our crosses to bear I suppose!!!

This is another example of what is a much wider issue, the fact that employers are looking to cut costs & their biggest overhead is labour. I would imagine that the client is still getting charged top whack & someone, i.e the electrical contractor is making a few quid.
If the 8 big electrical contractors get their way, (see thred: SMA's & the de-skilling of our industry) this will become a much more common problem & could result in losses of up to £60 a day.

mmmmm If your an Electrician your an Electrician END OF after 2 years you use to be able to get your Approved electrician card thats possibly where this joker is getting the 2 year thing from

On the other hand stirr up the brown stuff n you WILl be "let go" quicker than a burning stick BUT its the Agency pay your wages not the numpty doing the induction and if the Agency are worth their salt they should stand by you as last few jobs Iv been on agency have forwarded stuff to client first including copys of grade card so they kney your "time" was out 6 months ago AS for my opinion your possibly better than some spotty kid who has all the qualifications but no idea one end of uni from the tflange on 6inch trunking
