get into the industrial side. domestic sucks and commercilal ain't that much better.

Depends on what your longer term goal is. Doing industrial/larger commercial generally needs a larger team (not quite so easy for self employed to start up with, so you'd prob have to go the contracting/agency route). Domestic and Small Commercial you can start up as a lone bod and grow from there, possibly into the industrial side as well, once you had the repuation for good work. If you don't mind being on the cards then the world is your oyster. As Tel says Domestic sucks! Lots of small jobs, crawling around in lofts doing rewires etc .... and lots of competition from your local kitchen and bathroom fitters etc.

Yeah i'm thinking i'll probably change my mind a good few times along the road before settling on a particular field, suppose i won't really know what direction i'll prefer until i start experiencing the work. What i DON'T want to be doing in the future is sitting in a workshop fixing pcb's, brown and white goods etc, i want to be out getting my hands dirty and stuck into bigger projects re-wiring buildings and the like.

good luck on your journey I am also doing my svq3 as an adult apprentice and am thoroughly enjoying it college can be difficult at times particularly the maths but grin and bare the rewards will be great I am 37 so I also am a late starter but man I love a challenge best of luck

Hi,

May I ask what books you needed or any web sites or other resources which you found useful. I am starting a level 5 per-apprenticeship course for Electrical Installation soon so ANY preparation I can get in first will be worth it. What sort of maths do you need at the start?

Welcome aboard
