NIC domestic installer assessment?

Hi Guys,

I want to fit a new shower circuit to a family members house so I can be assesed on it. It is a counsel house. My question is as well as me notifying local building control for them to come out and inspect and test my work, would my family member also have to get permission from the counsel to have to shower installed, and if she didnt get permission would that be an issue with building control coming out to test my work?

By the way I spoke to my LBC and they want £274 to come and inspect and test for each job I`m to be assesed on.

you should be able to just do the work and notify BC after assessment ( always assuming you pass ) nic will tell you to notify 1st. £274. that's a joke. as long as you 've got tea and biccies ready for the assessor and don't cock it up.........

Yeah NIC have told me to notify and have it all tested first, before assessment. Has anyone got first hand experience in not notifying first and is the counsel house thing an issue when I do notify. Is it true that in a counsel house you have to get permission to do any work?

as telectrix said do the job then notify after your assessment end the job on your assesment day. that is how i did it with elesca.
No idea if you need permission from the council to do the work in the house.

Not sure how quickly you become NIC registered after passing the assessment......so are you guys saying that I would be able to sign it off myself because I`ve just passed the assessment or would I still have to pay the criminal rate of £274 to the BC. If this is the case then why not just notify when I do the job, before the assessment.......Bit confused, am I missing something here?

I am not with that lot

,but would expect the assessor to have no interest whatsoever whether the job was pre notified,they are after all just a sub contractor to the scheme
He is there to assess your competence,not to supervise building control nonesence

£ 274 pounds,I think I would chance my arm with that

Depends if the assessor wants to be a jobs worth though lads. I've heard of some NICEIC's letting it go but I think if anyone was going to pull you on it it would be the NI

First hand experience from me....I didnt notify and was not an issue with NICEIC, in fact did not even come up. I notified it myself after inspection. It takes about 10 working days to be up and running after you pass. Good luck just take your time with everything and if you dont know something look in the book, which is what they will expect you to do so dont be afraid to do it!

Thanks for all your advice so far guys but I got a couple more questions.

Q1. One of my assessments is going to add a new circuit for a security light. Now if there are no spare ways in the CU can I use an existing lighting ciruit breaker for the new circuit...will this be acceptable?

Q2. My other assessment is going to be a CU change and the DNO fuse is sealed. If I cut the seal to pull the fuse...is that deemed unacceptable by the NIC assessor. Bearing in mind he wont see the DNO`s fuse or meter cause its outside back to back with the CU?

ok steve. Q1. i would come off the rfc with an d/p fcu at 5A for the secirity light. main reason being that you have isolation in case of a fault without disrupting the lighting.

Q2. pull the fuse, the seals missing anyway isn't it?

Steve did you explian to the building control what the shower circuit was for as the few times I dealt with my local one concerning my original aessements and helping friends do thiers, the BC normally waive the fee, or at the worst ask for a nominal one.

No I did`nt mate. I`m not doing that one now anyway and from all the info I`ve been given by the members on this site I`m not gonna bother notifying both jobs until after my assessment mate

Seperate issue here guys. Can i supply and out side security light off the ring main through a FCU with a 3A fuse in it?
