I read in the paper the other day that it was due to “12th century electrical wiring”. Apparently the wiring was made of paper soaked in some chemicals.
Not bad considering electricity was only discovered some 600 years later!!

What's really tragic is how we never learn - we're just reactive. How much fire detection and prevention equipment could be bought for a tiny fraction of what it will now cost? With a place as precious and irreplaceable as that, even a single night watchman (remember those) with a fire extinguisher would have cost peanuts in comparison!
Look out for the next renovation to go up in smoke.
