Discuss Outside cable in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

I've seen T&E run in what looked like soil pipe before. I don't really see the point as it would be more expensive than just using swa but I wouldn't complain if I found it on an inspection and it wasn't full of water.
Personally I would like to run SWA in plastic pipe as I have seen what happens when it is nicked by a spade and left for a few years but I think most would think that is a bit ott and I would find it hard to justify to a paying customer.....

Ahh, that's why if your going to direct bury a SWA cable your trench should be 600mm. And, if were doing things properly, have a sand bed and cover, have protective cable tiles, and be provided with a warning tape along it's length!!! There is nothing OTT about running a SWA cable within a duct of some sort, especially in a domestic garden etc...

One things for sure, running a T&E underground is NOT a cable i would even give a passing thought to using!!

SWA my friend...definitely SWA. If anything you would at least use Steel Conduit, even considering PVC is a no go. But seriously, SWA.

no it doesn,t
ive just run half a length of hip to my shed with a 2.5 twe init

Just because you've done it doesn't make it the right thing to do or good practice.

To the OP just get your wallet out and buy some SWA or are we talking about you using T&E owned by someone else??

I can't believe theres people who think this is fine. What about the temperature in which the cable will operate potentially in the winter? It will just go brittle!! Not in a million years is this cable made to be buried in the ground!
To be really pedantic, if you look in the regs theres no reference method for 'buried' T+E so how can you work out the CCC of the cable to supply the garage for a start??

And to prove a point: http://www.britishstandardcables.co.uk/BS6004-cable.html

So are you going to note in the departures on the test cert that you havent followed the manufacturers instructions? To quote from that link, 'Electrical Cables to BS6004 are non-armoured and PVC insulated. They are intended for voltages up to and including 450/750 V. They are specified for internal wiring and lighting.'

Personally I gotta say I'd steer well clear of burying t+e (particularly for all the reasons mentioned above).

However (that's a big however and I still don't agree) funnily enough I've actually seen it done quite a few times. Think it stinks of DIY. Then again they always put it on the rcd side eheh

Swa buried 300 / 400mm down laid on a bed of sand covered with cable tiles and yellow danger tape lol over the top I no but not t&e has the penny dropped

I'd of been happier if you stated 500/600mm, that's roughly twice the depth of a garden spade or fork!! lol!!
We both know, that on the majority (if not all) of domestic cable trenches your not going to see any protective tiles being used. Lucky if you see any warning tape! lol!! :icon9:
