Hi, please can someone advise. I have completed the domestic installers course which was great but it did not cover outside lighting. I would like to install an outside light in my garden and due to the position I would have to bury the cable underground. There are no blanks in the DB and would really like some advice
Thanks in advance

Oh dear - what exactly do they teach/preach on these wonder courses.

Well, with what you've learnt as regards to other circuits/installations - apply commonsense and what do you come up with?

What do you think is acceptable? And then maybe we can advise.

You can't expect people to advise you if we don't think you're capable of carrying out the works.

You can either mount a small garage type board to extend existing fuseboard to allow for new circuits if thats what you need, or, if youre not going to everload anything you could come off an existing circuit. stick an RCD in line to protect your new outside light circuit if there arent any covering the circuit you take power from. Use armoured cable underground with electrical caution tape in the ground buried above it.

Thats fine, come off the socket if you like, make sure fused connection unit has rcd protection too if sockets arent already on one.
Only problem with this is if sockets are RCD protected, which they should be, when you get a little damp in your outside light the sockets will trip.

If it's done properly then this will not be an issue. I must have done thousands of RCD protected outside lights in my time and I've not had one tripping because of moisture
