No need to bring out a card - one already exists. All that needs to happen is for it to be a legal requirement to hold a valid JIB card.

Why?
what's wrong with producing your qualifications, why the need
for plastic cards, no one is policing the industy but are happy to take your money,
I'm f*****g sick of the parasites in this industry

Indeed. But carrying a card with your qualifications printed on the back seems a wee bit handier than carrying around a lever arch file or National Record of Achievement with dozens of certificates in it.

I think the JIB card is the correct vehicle for a licence.

Absolutely not!
For middlemen to tell you what you can & cannot earn while
taking your hard earned money for a piece of plastic doesn't cut it with me I'm afraid,
I have pointed out in other threads on this forum that you can be qualified to the hilt but
still be crap at your job, please explain how we get around that one, some of the worst Electricians
I have come across have been so called "approved" Electricians, wet behind the ears & stuck in the past,
taught by an old school boy who's still stuck in 15th edition land!

I found it actually quite awkward to get a JIB card. They wanted a certified copy of each of my
qualifications. When I got a renewal reminder this year I was actually told that if I fail to renew in time
I might not be entitled to get back on the JIB register.

I personally think that Part P should be in the sole control of JIB 'cos they do an in depht qualifications
check on each applicant. Why do we need 6 different schemes for Part P? Which one is the best?
I don't know.

None of them Stef,
if they had the customer & electrician in mind instead of their own bank accounts
then we wouldn't be in this mess, being forced on to a scheme is the same as being taxed to work.

Hi all looking at taking the part p as i install kitchens bedrooms and bathrooms, i cant seem to get my head around what course's i need to do to install ,lighting, cookers, sockets ,etc and certify my work ? at the moment i have a mate who is fully apprentice/college qualified to 17th but no part p ? if i take part p can i certify his work? if so what sort of system is this?how can somebody with a 5 day course be more aware of safety in electrical situations than a man of 5 years training, education, experience, i agree government money maker> Still what courses do i need to do to be deemed competent for installation situations in kitchens bedrooms bathrooms.

I had the same experience, my local LABC said it took 6 weeks for the NICEIC to notify them of my work,
now I just send builing control my certs by email, (saves me ÂŁ1.50) :D

On topic I would ditch part "pee" altogether, when your undercut by every tom dick & harry & pay
over ÂŁ3000 to middlemen before the work comes in I can honestly say part "p" is a massive failure (does anyone actually police it !!)

Yes I'm wondering why it has not been in the media much. I reckon that they are waiting to cash in on fines. All a money making scheme.

IT needs public awareness like CO.

One customer wanted me to wire a shower from a light circuit and got really offended when I told him its just simply not safe or practical and against regs.

He thought I was trying to rip him off and claimed he new about electrics and said he'll get his mate to do it. I think Part P is a good thing it just needs to come correct,

EAL domestic installer course inc Part P

Part P encompasses a lot of build regs.

So a really good experienced Commercial or Industrial electrician may be full qualified and superior in electrical knowledge but then go into a house and breach the build regs because he don't know them.

Not really.

Part-P covers dwellings. There are many different cateogories of electrician on the ECS JIB cards - most of which have nothing to do with domestic work.

With regards to policing the domestic work there is only one body of professionals with enough clout to make Mr DIY think twice and thats insurance companies. Its in their best interest (reduces their risk) by ensuring works are completed by competent persons. There are clauses in most policies that insist on work being completed correctly, but are buried under tons of other clauses.

Just my thoughts......................:)

LOL!

I've had the same experience,
got called to look at 4 houses for a landlord, said he needed periodics on all 4 as he's renting to students,
he didn't take any notice & thought he could do the electrical work himself!!
1 week later I pick up the local paper to see a large picture of one of his houses with smoke coming from the window & the fire brigade outside, the muppet had try to wire in a new shower from a lighting circuit & it had gone up in flames, I saw his number come up on my phone a day later............I ignored it.

Some house holders know about the insurance thingy, others couldn't care less.

Hi all, New to this forum so take it easy on me. Im a qualified electrician who has been in the trade for almost 14 years, i have finally been offered a major contract as my past work has impressed a past client. Only thing is i have to get part "p'ed" up. I have a good knowledge of electrical and a fair knowledge of testing my work but worried what the test and assesment will involve. Method statements and risk assesments are a worry as i havent really done this type of paperwork. could someone help with a lil more detail of what actually they look for???

Hi mate welcome to the forums if you join elecsa you are given a welcome pack with everything explained on what is needed on your assessment also in the pack there are examples on risk assessment , contracts etc you just make your own copies of with your business name added .Any problems just give them a call and they are very helpful .

Hi Martysparky,

Yes I think you are correct. From what I have heard it seems that this all should receive more publicity and we need more back up for the guys who do it correctly.

It does seem that the policing bit on part P is weak.

You also mention CO. This is another area where there is a change / introduction of Part J of the building regs. You will need CO alarm etc. This will have more impact but again will it be policed?

Interesting points, thanks,

Best wishes

Rex
