Part p[/h]
I think it's time for me to get a part p. I am trying to move my plumbing business in the direction of heating engineering and certified electrical installations.
whats my options regarding part p courses? Is it still a cheeky 2 day course to be a domestic installer or has that changed?
my gas is the ultimate goal but the sparks will go hand in hand with the gas

like putting in a bath and tiling

cheers for any advice

Is the heating side I am after, the plumbing side is fine, gas side will be next year, I have a understanding of the wireing of the controlls have found a few manufacturers courses that will only help.
i totally disagree with the putting people off being able to do both plumbing and electrical. What puts people off is say yes you can have a electric shower but you need to pay me to fit the shower and a sparkie to come wire it up. It becomes un cost effective, same as putting a pumped shower is, needs a spur, oh you need a sparkie. Much more professional to just crack on do the job myself hand the customer there ticket and keep the cost sensible. In my opinion
yes mate

Quality of a trade does not mean what qualifications you have got, doing college course ect to me that means nothing. It's about being able to do the tasks asked of you and doing the to a goog standard and takeing pride in you work. As long as you are legally allowed to do what you are doing

Just so you know part P isn't a course or a qualification....it's a building regulations document. It is available to read online.
Part P stipulates that some installations (but not all) in domestic accommodation have to be notified to building control. You can do this by paying a substantial fee to BC for each job notified,or becoming a member of a scam who for a much smaller fee will notify BC for you, but will nevertheless adopt other means of emptying your bank account.
There is no such thing as a part P course, but the scams will advise you on what courses they require you to complete in order to join.

Tommys Plumbing,

As someone that does exactly what you are trying to do so I can speak from experience when I say "don't run before you can walk".

I gained a lot of experience in each trade before I started to think about doing another one. I have C&G 2394 and 2395 and do complete electrical jobs (rewires included) as well as full Central heating systems.

Both Gas and electrics require a lot of knowledge on their own, in my opinion electrics requires more knowledge.

What knowledge do you have so far? How long have you been doing gas work? Are you doing a portfolio?

Have you done much gas work upto now? do you have someone to do your portfolio with?

On financial front I would say that you will find it hard to justify the extra costs (double Public liability, annual MFT calibration, annual membership of a scheme, a lot of extra tools) you would need to do proper electrical jobs to justify the costs.

How long did it take to learn plumbing? Presumably you served an apprenticeship, or was it a few weeks course?

What advice would you give an electrician who wanted to learn plumbing by a few days course?

It is a huge step from straight water plumbing which is unregulated to either electrics or gas which is highly regulated.

I would disagree that it is uneconomic employing a sparky compared to doing the job yourself as surely you would also be charging the going rate for the electrical work?
