Part p[/h]
I think it's time for me to get a part p. I am trying to move my plumbing business in the direction of heating engineering and certified electrical installations.
whats my options regarding part p courses? Is it still a cheeky 2 day course to be a domestic installer or has that changed?
my gas is the ultimate goal but the sparks will go hand in hand with the gas

like putting in a bath and tiling

cheers for any advice

I retrained in my mid 20s no one would do a me a apprenticeship so I had to do it all off my own back, to be fair I ain't done bad it's got us a good life and a house.
I will argue it out with anyone about apprenticeships, yes they are good and yes the experience is great, but on the flip side it's not always possible financialy, age wise, time wise.
Eng of the day legal is legal being competent and capable to do the job and takeing pride is far more important that anything.

Yes I got good people around me but it's about the service and putting food on my sons table

......So it's not about trying to makes ends meet then?

Personally, I would say that you will earn more money doing straight water plumbing jobs as you have far less costs and charge about the same hourly rate.

I trained in them because I love fault finding and you don't get much of that in water plumbing, I earned more when I only did plumbing, trouble is you can only sell an hours labour once.

Mark.

Nobody can tell you what to do but taking on a qualified Electrician would be the way for me, as Mark points out correctly you can only earn your hourly rate every hour, I slogged my guts out trying it that way but it was only when i decided to start employing people that I started to make proper money.
Also with the right staff you can offer a better service and no need to retrain.

See it's for the heating side, putting in spurs and showers even of there is a limited scope thing I could do.
I am not at the point to be takeing on any other body's yet and not sure if that's really my thing.

I think it will benefit me m, yes I take on all relevant points mentioned and thanks for them.

still not clear on what course I need to do tho lol any ideas

I am not getting into the short course long course argument but I would say you will need the 17th edition at very least.

That's why I said mate I wasn't getting into the argument, if you read back through the thread you can see I have advised taking on a qualified guy a few times.

Legal is legal! It's basically to do a spur legally. Not interested in a rewire. Not interested in qualification snobbery to be honest. I am a good tradesmen and take pride in my work as much if not more than most. I love my job and take great pride in doing it right.
i have seen plumbers and sparkies leave shocking and unsafe work behind. I DONT do that I do EVERYTHING 100%

What exactly do you mean by 'do a spur'?
To install a spur from an existing circuit you first need to test that circuit to confirm that it complies with the regulations, this requires the same level of knowledge as needed to design the circuit from scratch.
You mention shower circuits, installing one of these requires full design calculations for the circuit and protection along with knowledge of the special locations requirements of the regulations.

Electrical work doesn't neatly divide into small jobs and big jobs as even the smallest job can require the same level of knowledge as a full installation job.

So my question is not going to be answered then? Believe I am far from stupid I no how to install a shower and the cable, mcb requirements, I also understand that the ring that you spur off has to be up to regs as does the consumer unit.
Mall I want to no is what course options are available and find one that's right for me! For example my mate that does my gas did a 2 day part p course a few years back and that was enough for him to do his thing!

I guess advice is hard to get from hear. Noted

For the same reason I am going gas safe so I can do the lot without relying on others and paying others, it costs my customers more and if I do the job start to finish it's more money for me costs customers less and far more professional in my opinion.
For the same reason I do my own tiling so I don't have to pay anyone else and it done to my standard with respect.
the job is completed by me from start to finish.
its like a sparkie plumbing in a electric shower (everyone has) you do it because you can and why pay or get someone in to do it when you legally can!
i am a plumber and love plumbing and will be a plumber but there's f all wrong with developing my skills in the trades that go hand in hand with my own and are required on a weekly basses.
Its not only common sence but good business and are we not in business to make money?
there are countless plumbers that so the same as there are sparkies that pick up a blow tourch
