Hi,

was wondering if anyone in the sheffield area was willing to take on a NVQ 3 qualified electrician. I'm wanting more experience before I start to take on work. The only catch is I'm still working full-time (not in the electrical industry) so any saturday work for free labour would be much apprecitated. I do have my own transport as well.

Regards,
Matthew

the nvq 3 portffolio is more than just a consumer change its 8 individual units about the different areas of installation and then you have to do the 8 units again!! on a different side of electrical installation for example stage 1 domestic stage 2 commercial, also there has to be a six month gap between stages so its not a quick thing to do, most apprentices take 18months to do their write up to do it properly while gaining the experience. and your forgetting the am2 which most colleges wont allow you to sit until your either complete or say 75% done on your nvq 3

Basically there you summed it up Bob and there are numerous threads on here arguing who is or isn't Competent.

The bottom line to this, as we stand the only yardstick to competency is a set of ad hoc qualifications. You can according to our industry now do a 5 week DI course and be competent in doing domestic Installation.

There is nothing stopping me if I so wished carry out any electrical work on domestic/commercial/industrial, if I found someone stupid enough to let me, and have no experience, qualifications or anything, it is just if things went wrong and I could not prove that competency, by qualifications, not 40 yrs experience, I may be in trouble.

At least the domestic schemes ask for a bare minimum of perhaps the BS 2382 qualification, for commercial/industrial I could blag someone and talk a good job and be let loose as a competent person, knowing not a thing about electrical work.

There is suppose to be changes in the schemes, that to join a scheme soon you will need that NVQ level 3, but it was suppose to be implemented this summer, and I'm not sure if it as.

There are several of us on here that are pretty glad we are coming to an end of our time in this industry as it has been decimated, by governments, training providers, and to an extent companies who now consider us to be semi skilled.
