Carried out loft extension in old ladys house, normally install sub-board just for loft supplies but she wants her old db (3036 fuses) changed for a new one and loft circuits installed all in new split rcd board. Ok fine done this few times before but at this house, the head is in the front garden with a pyro coming out feeding her db. Any suggestions as to what I should do in terms of replacing the pyro as I dont think its a good idea to still use?! Any help is much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Leave the pyro in place, all you need to do is loosen the lock ring, remove CU, fit new metalclad CU, tighten lock ring.
Youve got the copper sheath of the pyro as your earth as well. There are tables online that will show you the area size.

Ok that sounds better, I'll do an IR test on it and hopefully it will all be ok, but I think the earth coming in with it is only a 10mm so I'm pretty sure ill have to upgrade that anyway? Also how do you know what size pyro is, is it normally marked on the cable?

If you look at the gland it will give you the size

if it is an imperial cable it will be a 3 digit number check here http://www.pyrosales.com.au/files/grabdoc.php?type=doc&id=181 for metric equivalent size

a metric cable will be a number which is the number of cores a lettter "L" or "H" light or heavy duty followed by the CSA of the cores

Have you taken in to account the CSA of the sheath? It's most likely to be bigger that anything you're thinking of putting in. Have a look in the sticky's, there's a thread bout pyro. Read and understand.

I have always thought pyro was one of the best cables ever made and best lasting just a pity the price forced it out of favour.
Working with pyro was a true are and I have spent months at a time enjoying working with it in the past. Distilleries hospitals and even council houses at one time. A real art being lost.

I've worked on MICC in London for years on fire alarms, it was true art.
I'm now in a situation where I'm testing MICC every year in most of the installations I'd be involved in maintaining. Most of this stuff is 40 to 50 years old, and it still has a great IR considering its in a salty and damp enviroment.
It has to be, without question, the best electric cable ever made. It will out live all PVC insulated cables.
