There have been some posts on this forum about members being critical about the current status of "electricians" with everything from 5 day courses to 4 years training.

Most of the controversy is valid because the trade seems to have failed to demand that the standard of training meets industry requirements.

We have Summit Skills setting the requirements for City and Guilds, who set the requirements for college courses, which become the standards that students must meet.

So why do we have such a sorry state of poorly trained "electricians"? Why has it all been watered down? The college meet the Guild standards, set by Summit Skills so where does it all go wrong?

Surely the trade should have a say in the first place?

It’s because it’s easy to take people’s money and feed them through short courses on theory and regs but there is no incentive on employers or companies to give people the experience or hands on training that is required to become competent.

All started going wrong when they dumped the "apprenticeship" way of learning. For some of us at the age of 16 and leaving school it was the way forward, now they just push kids to go to Uni and to get in to perpetual debt cycle and come out with a useless degree that has no relevance to the job they are doing answering a phone in a call centre.

My question is still why don't the trade demand better? So many rules and crepe we have to go through as properly trained responsible artisans, why not say we've had enough of wannabees pitching up from colleges and training centres

Because it’s all about money to them - you only have to look at the schemes to see that. You pay them up to £600 per year to send emails for you and that is because the local authorities want no responsibility.
Everyone now is lazy except for the hard working trades being fleeced left right and centre.
A regs book shouldn’t cost £95 end of!
An update course shouldn’t cost £150
Schemes shouldn’t be charging what they do for what amounts to nothing much.
Then there is the HMRC as another thread has discussed. CIS what a slap in the face to the hard working trades.
Etcetera Etcetera Etcetera!

Trouble is Mate far to many organisations lining their pockets, increasing corporate turnover, to worry about the damage they do to a once revered Trade.

You're correct, to a degree.
As regards the short courses, they are to get you through an exam and 'qualified???'
You mention theory...there's hardly any of that involved. It's a case of know your regs (to a degree) to become qualified.
A major part of courses was Electrical Principles, just as important as Regulations....where the hell has that disappeared to?

Agree with the posts, but also lack of skills, mostly due to fast fix installs.
The sparks with have now,the younger generation really ain’t got a clue,it’s down to the old brigade, which in days gone by,the next new sparkies were always willing to learn & work.

Eh?

The guys from Eastern Europe are coming here for your training because they say it's so easy here.

The guys from Western Europe aren't because they also have higher standards and respect them
