Hi all, I'm going to be having a look at a house which has problems with rats eating cables. The guy who has contacted me seems to think the damage is pretty extensive from several years of vermin abuse. So I'm estimating it'll probably want a rewire. So......

Is there any other way of rat-proofing cabling other than galv conduit? Anyone got any quicker/easier/cheaper ideas? Maybe trunk in loft spaces and between floors?

Anyway, any ideas appreciated....

LAND_Type-96_Tanks_lg.jpg no picture didnt load i was thinking more like this

tried one of them with the squirrels they chewed it to bits , and also with squirrels the structual damage can be incredable

we had the little darlings in the loft. i managed to catch them in a live bait box but on clearing up managed to touch a nice live cable that got me and nearly blew me through the bloody roof. the damage they had done was unreal.
one thing i will say though is they are clean little buggers, they had used a paint tray as a litter tray to pee in while they were in there :D

if your crawling in lofts with rats id wear disposable overalls, gloves and dust mask, carry loads of diseases do those things...:( and id go with galv conduit or some galv trunk depending how big the place is..

thats a very good point what i carry in my van is some of that alcohol hand wash dont need water its like they have in hospitals you can buy it at tesco's how many times are you on the job and you cant wash your hands wonderfull stuff to have

Rats don't have a bladder so they pee all the time. Generally they don't like lofts as there is no water for them to drink but this does not stop them. They are carriers of Weils disease in their urine so follow Alarm Man's advice, I am not sure how long the disease stays active in dried urine and don't want to find out. If you find a dead carcass don't pick it up by the tail, that’s the bit that gets wettest.

So thats the only part we "can't" eat :)

Some of the vilest rats I have come accross were the people having the work done, and some of them had toiletry problems evident at their tails as well
