Rats!Rats!Rats!

Hi all, I'm going to be having a look at a house which has problems with rats eating cables. The guy who has contacted me seems to think the damage is pretty extensive from several years of vermin abuse. So I'm estimating it'll probably want a rewire. So......

Is there any other way of rat-proofing cabling other than galv conduit? Anyone got any quicker/easier/cheaper ideas? Maybe trunk in loft spaces and between floors?

Anyway, any ideas appreciated....

Rats don't have a bladder so they pee all the time. Generally they don't like lofts as there is no water for them to drink but this does not stop them. They are carriers of Weils disease in their urine so follow Alarm Man's advice, I am not sure how long the disease stays active in dried urine and don't want to find out. If you find a dead carcass don't pick it up by the tail, that’s the bit that gets wettest.

building regs springs to mind Part ......

I would drive past that house, as fast as the law permits.
I would hate looking at a job where there "might" be rats, but advance warning that they are there, is enough for me to RUN away.

We tried them when we were in Wandsworth and got mice. they didn't work, mind you we were sharing a house with the most untidy people ever to walk the earth. Horses for courses I spose

ive got to do one the same rat s**t every where. just make sure ure well insulated ie rubber gloves tyvek suit and mask . viles disease
can be contracted very easy and can kill you dont take any chances trying to earn a few quid . Ive been in the building trade for 28 yrs
and have had mates suffer the effects and some older trades men die from it , doctors were treating them for flu before finding the real
cause. just be careful.

My old man caught it when they emigrated to New Zealand while share farming on a pig unit , i remember him saying that it makes you want to die just to make it stop !
I think it turns your pee black and a pin dropping would sound like a bomb going off .

Got the info from this link What is Weil's Disease? and it doesn't sound good,

"Weil's disease is an infection that humans can catch from animals, including domestic animals like dogs. Perhaps most commonly however, the disease is spread by rats. Rats carry and excrete an organism called Leptospira ictero-haemorrhagiae in their urine. Between 50 and 60% of all rats carry this organism. If humans are infected with this organism, it can make them very ill and even result in death. As many as 10% of all cases of human infection have resulted in death."

Keep away from that infested place.

What ever you decide make sure you wear gloves !!!!!!!!! them things carry loads of crap ! and over suits are the way to go that you throw away after use ! good luck buddy !

Its pretty amazing that half of us haven't already caught Wieis disease already if you think about some of the places you have worked in the past.

Rats are everywhere.

Trunking, nice idea but it’s amazing where the little ba**ards can get to. Opened a section of 2” trunking and three of the ****s jumped out, I haven’t a clue how they got in! this was in a chemical plant, where the hell they found food to survive I don’t know.

Was working in an old barn and the same happend ! pulled the lid off the trunking and one flew out ! not a nice way to start the days work ! lucky i wasnt up the ladder at the time ! before i open them up now i always bang it and listen !
