Hi guys and girls,

A client is moving their kitchen into another room that currently has a few sockets in it.

The sockets are currently on a ring final circuit that covers every socket in the house.

They've asked me to add sockets for the new kitchen so I am going to run a new kitchen circuit most of which can be done in trunking as it will be behind the units going in.

My question is am I able to replace the faceplates of the old sockets not being used/covered with a blanking plate and use maintenance free wago's inside so the ring for the rest of the house is not affected? (3 sockets I think that will end up behind units)

Thanks in advance

If the redundant sockets are behind the kitchen units, depending on layout, you can cut the carcase and install an access panel. That way, it looks tidy and the blanked off sockets can be inspected when necessary. Label the access panels accordingly. The Manthorpe ones are expensive and too big, but B&Q do a much cheaper range in smaller sizes.
They are also handy for giving access to stopcocks etc. Designed for plasterboard really, but can give a neat finish in timber too.

The problem with Wago and maintenance free is the compliance with BS5733 (MF). There is documentation on the wago site. I’ll upload it. It’s down to max aggregate current - how much can flow within a MF box and the connectors used - 50A for most wago connections. The connections need to be split into another wago box. However, putting wago in a socket backbox to say, split the ring is not MF and is also accessible.

I would disconnect this part of the existing ring circuit and bypass it via the adjacent sockets either side. Therefore no mystery live wiring.

If the existing sockets are to be on a different ring from the kitchen is it possible to utilise the sockets through on the other side of the wall ? It’s a bit hard to come up with suggestions when some posts assume some things and yet we don’t have the facts like is it solid walls ? If it’s plasterboard walls then it shouldn’t be too difficult to get rid of the existing ones and run a new wire in ! Or if the wires go up is there even a roof space or flat roof ? But if it’s getting a new kitchen then as long as your in before the decorators then anything is possible !
