I'm looking at doing a security camera install at a garage in the near future. I haven't done a lot of this type of work and even then only on a fairly small scale. Since this place seems to be the source of all knowledge (electrical at least!) I was hoping anyone with experience in this field could offer some advice.
I've done plenty of data work and from what I understand and have been told, the two are fairly similar in concept. What I'm after really is advice on the finer details such as the type of camera that would be most suitable, the best type of cable to be used etc. Would Cat6 be sufficient or would Coax be a better option. Am I correct in thinking that if Coax is used then a separate cable would be required to provide power for the cameras?
Some cameras will be installed outdoors and will be used to monitor number plates etc so I'm assuming fairly high resolution cameras would be required. How high a resolution are we looking at for this instance? Infra-red would also be essential. I'm also wondering about a suitable DVR. There will be 11 cameras in total so a 16 chanel DVR would be most appropriate since the client would like to monitor all cameras at once. He would also prefer HDD recording as opposed to DVD, so how much HDD capacity are we looking at for him to be able to record this footage for a reasonable amount of time before being rewritten? The ability to monitor the cameras over the internet would be also be a plus if this is possible which I believe it is.
I know this sort of equipment isn't cheap, particularly if quality cameras are to be used which is the case here. Can anyone offer a reliable place to source this equipment in the South Wales area? And with regards to the cameras would it be better to suit each camera to its location or to use the same cameras throughout the installation to ensure compatibilty?
Sorry for the lengthy post guys! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers!
