Hi,

Just had my first CV through the door from a 16 year old who has previously done work experience with another local firm.

I have a CU change on Friday, what do you say, shall I ring him and see if he wants to tag along?

Got an extension next week too.

Any thoughts? Can it hurt to do so? Do I pay him and if so, what in? Biscuits and tea?

Everyone deserves a chance, be totally upfront that you a only a few jobs, and give him a trainees wage....they dont deserve to work for nothing

On the other hand if he is really keen he would do a few sessions free see if he is worth it and if he does work free/watch for the first couple of times you will be able see his genuine level if interest ,

If it turns out great work out apprentice wage rates and get him involved when you can might be a win win

Thanks everyone for your input, it's certainly given me something to think about today.

I rekon ÂŁ3 an hour is about the nmw for an apprentice. Give him a couple of weeks see if he's any good. Also give him a bit of theory work to do like basic ohms law and transposing formula etc so he can get a taste for that side. If he enjoys it try talking to your local college about taking on an apprentice, colleges round Manchester tend to give employers money for taking on an apprentice. 3days in college and 2days with you! He learns and he earns. After a few years it may well work in your favour. Slightly less time for you on site so more time drawing in more business.
Check with your insurance firm about employers liability it might only be ÂŁ50 extra per year. Tell him to get his own boots and just supply hat vest gloves an eye protection.
I hope he works out for you

Ive spoken to him today and hes coming with me to watch / have a chat whilst i do a CU change. (By the way, im trying a Hager board tomorrow instead)

He seemed nice enough, didn't sound like an idiot and his text was all in proper English with please and thank you too. Ill let you know tomorrow how I got on.

Weve just started a new lad and ill be honest with you it is well worth it. Hes got great ambition and hes a grafter with a good intelligent head on his shoulders. I say give him a chance and youll know if hes any good or going to be any good.

So, I gave this lad a chance today...

I picked him up at 08:45 sharp, he was ready and waiting...

Very polite and presentable.

He has booked on a two / three year college course in September and paying for it off his own back Level 2 Electrical, think 2330.

I pulled up at the job, he was straight out, let me carry that for you, then he started moving the stuff that was in the way of where were to work, didn't even have to ask him...

very willing, eager to learn, asked questions etc..

I had to knock a bif of breeze block out with the SDS, i went to put it back in the van, i turn round and he is there with the dustpan and brush cleaning up...

I tried to fully explain everything I was doing and why we do it. He doesn't know anything at all about electrics, literally nothing.

I showed him the regs book etc, explained thoroughly about safe isolation and consequences of not doing it etc.

This was a board change by the way, so I explained to him about the Nm for the screws etc, and he then looked through the literature to find it, sure enough he found it. Then i got him to tighten everything down, then check everything was tight and not broken off.

He did all the R1+R2 tests on the upstairs lights under my supervision.

Did various other things, made labels with the machine,

So very helpful, he will be joining me again next week now, im quite excited infact!

Oh and we even went to Eddys and had a free hot chocolate!

!= There is nothing sharp about 8.45 ya lazy sod!
2= I am really glad he turned out to be a good one
3= I said it would make things more productive,so technically I am going to take the credit for encouraging you.

Sounds like you've a gud un there.
If he is 16 why is he paying for a course? All basics are funded! I doubt its 2330 as if I'm right in thinking that was phased out in 2011. I think its 2365/6 now but could be wrong. Good luck!

08:45, the customer didn't want me there till 9am, I usually start at 8am on site. GMES, thank you for your encouragement!

This is the board I changed with him, he thought it was only going to take an hour, he had no idea what was involved.

Interestingly, well more annoyingly, the socket circuits, I couldn't label sockets up and sockets down etc, because probably 50% of each circuit was on the other floor, no idea why, they have had the house from new and no works been done. Hence the label on the front to explain, and vague 'Sockets' label on the breakers.

I have never fitted a Hager board other than Invicta as always been an MK person, not a chance im going back to MK now, the Hager board is so much better!
