Im currently employed full time 39hrs a week pluss OT, more and more people are asking me to do jobs for them like add extra sockets, periodic testing, install extractor fans ect... Now i would like to earn a little more money and have something to fall back on if i ever loose my main job. But i don't really know what to expect. and i cant see myself doing enough to make much on the set up costs, i'll have to buy a test meter get registered ect... how much does it roughly cost to get part p and insurance basicly ready to go?

Then on my initial assessment how can they assess me if i havent done any work yet? how does this work?

cheers

elecsa sound the best option do they offer insurance with them or will i have to go through a different company?

I have tools, and an 24v sds drill allready, aswell as an old robin test kit which is out of calibration, so i'd proberly get a new kit, can you buy 2nd hand test kits? and then calibrate them in your name? i cant see why not, but never know there could be some dodgy rule

And the cost of things seem a bit steep for me, as i wont be getting many jobs

Elecsa ÂŁ444
17th amd1 ÂŁ75
Memorandum of Guidance on the Electricity at Work Regulations ÂŁ10
Approved Document P ÂŁ14
IEE On-Site Guide ÂŁ18
insurance ÂŁ200
test intrument ÂŁ500

Total ÂŁ1261

I'd like to do this but i cant see myself taking that kind of money to make it worth while, i'd be working for a rewire for nothing or 2 or 3 board changes each year for nothing. Sorry this part p lark is a load of crap

So elecsa want you to pay more when you do periodics even though you dont need to be part p'd too do them seems stupid to me.

ELECSA charges for Periodic Assessments:
  • You need to take a Periodic Assessment when you take your Part P assessment, and the additional cost will be ÂŁ240 + VAT (a total of ÂŁ610 + VAT) for the initial assessment. For surveillance visits (which are only every 3 years) the additional cost is just ÂŁ100 + VAT (a total of ÂŁ470 + VAT when applied for and paid for together).
  • Notification of Periodic Inspection - ÂŁ1.50+VAT

Question.

If a job is notifiable does that mean that without belonging to a part P scheme I would have to pay LABC to come out and visit the job and pay all the associated fees etc?

I mean a job like a fuse board change or a supply to a the garden.

Thanks.

well i think its a case of the LABC getting to know you.....yeah the first few times they will want to come out and inspect your work and check out the certification.....but they may get used to you after a while....its a case of."its him on the phone again".....we`l just notify it without inspecting as he`s ok this one......

He's bet bet is to go with STORMA it provides the facilities he needs at half the cost. No need to go as high as 500 quid for a MFT, you can get good second hand ones that are nearly brand new. That's his initial 2 biggest outlays sorted, then hunt around for cheap insurances. You can get the BGB cheaper than the 75 notes he quoted and he should have this in any event whether it be for his private or day job, same with the other IEE publications quoted. It's going to be a lot less than the 1200 earlier quoted...

yes and its about making your own accessories up n all...such as breakout boxes for your R1 R2,....wander leads....such as a thread in here a while back and the adaptors for PAT etc.....make my own stuff up like this i do and it can be quite enjoyable to do n all.......and as for MFTs etc at silly prices....got mine for ÂŁ50 + ÂŁ10 postage......its a belter n all and does a lot more than the fluke 1652 and Megger 1502 etc.....will run current clamp in A and mA and earth resisitance, lux levels, downloads etc........so they are out there for not a lot of money...if you look.............

what tester do you use? out of the manufacturers ive used, metral, megga, robin and fluke, i prefer the megga's. Though i'm not saying theyre the best at what they do as i'm sure there's better out there for the price.

What insurance companies do you use? The cheapest quote I've came across soo far was 268 and that was with direct line i know theres going to be cheaper ones but i cant find them.

I've never heard of stroma as suggested earlier, and there fore i would be a bit concerned that joe public wouldn't either where as theyre more likley to have heard of nic, napit, elecsa

As I said earlier mate look at my thread link 2 or 3 posts ago - discussions there about what insurer with someone suggesting Trade Direct..........

Why would Joe Public be bothered?? They are mainly interested in your price, and that your legal, which you will be. Why the hell do you want to pay big bucks for a provider, when your only going to be using them for a bit of private work?? Your moaning about start-up costs verses income expected, but then dismiss the cheaper option. Who cares if STORMA are new and small, they are a legal provider and meet your needs, ...end of story!!

Isn't it "Stroma" not Storma? Either way, I agree, they are offering an approved scheme to join. They will only grow if people use them. Clients can be directed to their site if they ask. I must admit I found the Stroma site difficult to navigate when compared to the Elecsa one...................
