Im currently employed full time 39hrs a week pluss OT, more and more people are asking me to do jobs for them like add extra sockets, periodic testing, install extractor fans ect... Now i would like to earn a little more money and have something to fall back on if i ever loose my main job. But i don't really know what to expect. and i cant see myself doing enough to make much on the set up costs, i'll have to buy a test meter get registered ect... how much does it roughly cost to get part p and insurance basicly ready to go?

Then on my initial assessment how can they assess me if i havent done any work yet? how does this work?

cheers

With regards to your Liability insurance make sure you go through the options and only select what you need.

I don't do TV Aerials so that came off straight away. I did a comparison quote with the same provider one inluding aerials and one not and there was a large difference.

Also don't forget you will need indemnity cover if you are doing periodic inspections which bumps the price up too.

I pay under ÂŁ95 for the year, through Trade Direct iirc and the Policy is held with Zurich. 2million (minimum requirement for Elecsa) and 50k indemnity.

its to easy to get the wrong end of the stick on here. I know what the 2330 is trev as Ive done it mate along with my 2382. I was going to do my 2391 but whats the point. ultimately I want to be self employeed and if all I want to do is domestic type installations surely there was no need for me to do the 2330 and even less need to do the 2391 or 2391. I could have just done a 10 week course and then part p registered with elecsa as f rom what im gathering as they will come out to see is one major and one minor installation which isnt that hard tbh. if they pass me im good to do any jobs I can get. what I was trying to say is surely this 2330 is designed for something, is it for sparkys working for contrators as contractors out on site as it doesnt seem to be for the domestic housebasher.

what I was trying to say was as I wont to be a house basher was there really any need for me to do a 3 year course.

Christmas Eve is 24th....I know what my look is like the assessor will be pi*sed off having to work this close to xmas. or it'll snow so my assessment will be cancelled

Oooops!! Must be my age ...lol!! Anyway, i doubt if they would be doing any assessments on Xmas Eve. So i reckon far more likely the 23rd will be his last day, He'll want to get away earlyish. Anyway, have you known anyone fail one of these assessments?? What there after is your money, you would have to be an absolute bloody disaster to fail one of these assessments??... I don't think i've seen a single post, on this or other forums where someone had actually failed lol!!!

the 2330 was designed so that it is a basic style qualification which covers all basic bases. so you have an inside. meaning if you then move into a specific field your qualification is diversity and the additional specific qualification then adds as a kind of bolt on instead of years of class work.......if you understand my rambles

tell me something mate....why did you get into sparkying? Was it just for the money?.....Or was it for choosing what can be a rewarding career that just happens that it can pay reasonably well?...My point here lofty is you do such courses as the C&G 2391 etc to improve and better yourself and your understanding of (in this case inspection and testing) as much if not more so than just to "get a job" or "because the boss said I had to".....

I wont lie I like the idea of earning ÂŁ240 a day and its what drew me tot he industry. admitably Its a year or so away at the moment but I find I love work even if im on ÂŁ100 a day. Not to sure why I got into it as I dint get excited by it as a kid. I knew I wanted a trade and decided to pick the hardest one. I did want to do the 2391 to better myself and no doubt if you wont to be employeed by a company they will 9/10 ask for this as well now, but as I say theres no need if I decide to go it alone as elecsa just want to see im competant and dont require this cert.

well from what my boss n i have seen and i am sure many others in here n all as regards the part p and poor standards of wireing install it seems to me like the part p providers will pass a goat or summat to start wireing stuff up and certing it...lol....after all you only need the 17th edition to be accepted onto one of these schemes.....needs to change does that one.....should hold an inspecting and testing cert ...such as the C&G 2392 (absolute minimum)...but preferably the C&G 2391.....to verefy your own work for a start......
