Signs of house needing a rewire??

I have had a call from a friend asking me to come check his wiring in his house and to basically tell him if he needs it rewired.

I know the fusebox will need replacing as he has the old rewireable cartridge fuse set up.

What a wanted to find out is what are the obvious or most common signs of a rewire being needed? I understand most oldish properties have white cable with old red and black colours etc, but is that an instant sign of a required rewire?

I plan to test the installation regardless of whether it needs rewiring or not when I upgrade the fusebox, but the bloke wants answers and prices asap. That leads me to my next question of how much should a rewire come to roughly. its a small 2-3 bed house and will only require basic sockets switches and lights etc (nothing fancy).

Any help would be much appreciated!

I bet he wants answers, I smell a Cowboy, No EICR carried out and a customer who wants answers, poor bugger, I hope he isn;t a retired man on a tight pension.

Obvious DIY by unqualified persons. Old Bakerlite switches/pendant Could easily be swapped for white accesories. Whether the ring mains are actually ring maina What if just radials are installed?. Water/gas earthing Then apply for a PME if thats the case. I'd start there

Would you not carry out a EICR instead?

Whoa! Just wait a cotton picking minute here! Don't rip anything out yet as I think you've stumbled onto something very special..... a 'rewireable cartridge fuse'! I've just gotta see a picture of this hybrid fuse which I believe to be the ultra rare BS 3088 or the lesser known BS 3061!

A member for 3 years Pete, I despair I really do, No testing, No visual checks, the customer is concerned yet he is asking what info we can give to assess whether the house needs rewiring or not as he isn't sure, Honestly I am absolutley gobsmacked, I can bearly believe it.

Please get yourself on a testing and inspecting course and read section 6 of the BGB, until then please do not attempt to take any work on in a domestic premises for the sake of the house owners.

He is just going out on his own and wants some advice. If he has been with someone else for years he may have mainly just done install. Maybe he is a really good installer but has not priced jobs before and his old boss did the testing.

whats a rewirable cartridge fuse ? is it a cartridge fuse with a piece of wire wedged down the side
