I have had a call from a friend asking me to come check his wiring in his house and to basically tell him if he needs it rewired.

I know the fusebox will need replacing as he has the old rewireable cartridge fuse set up.

What a wanted to find out is what are the obvious or most common signs of a rewire being needed? I understand most oldish properties have white cable with old red and black colours etc, but is that an instant sign of a required rewire?

I plan to test the installation regardless of whether it needs rewiring or not when I upgrade the fusebox, but the bloke wants answers and prices asap. That leads me to my next question of how much should a rewire come to roughly. its a small 2-3 bed house and will only require basic sockets switches and lights etc (nothing fancy).

Any help would be much appreciated!

That was very poor timing wasn't it MDJ!!

You're going to have to get ready for one or two 'interesting' replies hbrad, but stay calm and some responses will be very helpful.

Have a look at the thread recently posted by MDJ and that will give you an idea of whether the CU really does need changing.... It wont need changing just because it has old rewirable fuses as they may or may not still be working perfectly well..

Good luck..
this really is drivvel.

for a start if the fuse wire is the correct rating for the circuit/s it protects...the circuit meets times...then whats your problem?...caus the way you were saying it is like it was something mechanical..like its allrite today...but it suddenly stopped working..

what your looking for is times, correct rating of fusewire for circuit overload protection and that barriers & enclosures are intact...i would also say that checking that Ipf was within tolerance of BS3036s utilised (1,2 or 4KA)

A member for 3 years Pete, I despair I really do, No testing, No visual checks, the customer is concerned yet he is asking what info we can give to assess whether the house needs rewiring or not as he isn't sure, Honestly I am absolutley gobsmacked, I can bearly believe it.

*******removed, abrasive comments*******But I have you know I work close to a number of senior and experienced electricians who oversea all of my work I am currently carrying out. *******removed, abrasive comments*******spare a thought that I might just be trying to ascertain some basic tips and pointers as I have just come out of my time and don't always want to run these questions through with my friends. *******removed, abrasive comments*******

Definitely, although most likely within the accessories. I've often found that once accessories are disconnected the cabling IR is fine. Sometimes...
