speaker wiring

so during my apprenticeship i have never really done anything with speakers wise , started a job which they want 4 points for speakers in both down stairs living room back to the stereo

doing some research on speaker cables

would i need a class 2/3 cable (79 strand 2 core class 2 speaker cable ) to go in a chase in wall or willany 79+ stand cable will do ? chasing up at the wholesaler and they didn't have any idea on class 2

any information on like home audio around the house would also be appreciated for future wise


anyone care to give me light on the difference between gauge / strand

it might be worth using plastic conduit, it might be 5 speakers now but 7 at a later point

plastic conduit to run them in wall ?


more interested in knowing about class 2 speaker cables after left feeling stupid after the wholesalers did some digging and came back with nothing

Your over thinking it, just plain speaker cable, one to each speaker back to the stereo point, straight forward.

just wondering, because on many websites state class 2/3 cable for insurance claims wise so theres no comeback

Insurance claims? it is signal cabling, it cannot catch fire, why don't you pop into your local Maplins and ask the guys in there what cable they recommend for the system you are wiring?

i know that but its only what i have read

mdj is right to be honest, there will be less than 10v on the speaker cable.

these sites that claim you need a certain class cable are snake-oil salesman.

monster are well known for ripping people off.

they were selling a 1k hdmi lead XD

normal speaker cable should be fine, it will be classed as seperated extra low voltage so doesnt need protection either (just a L+N)

I'll let you all in to a little trade secret from the entertainment industry, but promise you don't tell anyone!

In nearly all theatres, cinemas, studios etc the super special speaker cable is either singles in trunking or T&E

And it sounds just as good as any of those class 5000 oxygen free cables!

I could easily see the sense in that. The only difference between cheap and expensive wire designated as 'speaker wire' is the thickness. (and often a bit thicker insulation to make it feel more substantial/expensive).

What do you mean by thickness? A 2.5mm wire will always be 2.5mm whatever the price.

We use a thick rubber jacketed flexible cable for touring/temporary work, but even that is no more than a black rubber flex but with different coloured cores

We use BS7671 not NFPA NEC over here.

Just to add. For my home I used 6mm tri-rated singles as they were free from where I worked.
