in the market for a new laptop this year kids.
my 6 year old advent still works ok but want something lighter & more compact for travelling with.
looking to get a thin 11" netbook without dvd optical drive to save weight.
just wondering how folk find windows 8 to operate / navigate in comparison to the old vista premium ive been used to.
a massive step forward or a pain in the arse ?
and any general feedback on the hardware currently available in todays market.
merci.

Hate windows 8. It's a step too far!, but you don't have a choice these days, 7 was far better!!

All my laptops are Sony, IMHO worth every penny and you can tell the difference

I hate windows 8 too, however that shouldn't be your concern, I would recommend a minimum intel core i5 for a laptop, higher spec if possible.

dont think youve much of a choice of getting windows 8 if buying from new

cant be that bad surely ?
more a case of getting used to something different maybe ?

you get used to it, but it is a bit weird at first, I think it was developed for touch screen computers really and it can be hard work on a normal laptop IMO Biff.

Windows 8 was designed for touch screen devices. There are workarounds which emulates version 7 (i.e. start button etc.) if you don't choose a touch screen device.

Another option is to go the Linux route and Open Office etc. By far the cheapest and there's loads of support out there!
... and you keep your old hardware too. In fact it's free.

What do you use your laptop for Biff? Do you run and resource hungry programs like AutoCAD etc? Are you a gamer, if so what games?

i run the most sophistocated trollware in existence , it allows me to monitor the movements of admin who think they can delete & edit threads without me knowing. ;-)
