Min spec Intel Core 5i and at least 6GB ram - 8 if you can afford it. Don't buy Dell, buy HP, tosh or Sony.

Edit: my laptop and our main PC use Windows 7 which I quite like, the kids laptops use Windows 8 and I'm not a fan of it. Microsoft are trying to be too clever with W8 IMHO

Windows 8.1 has seen Microsoft do a u-turn and bring back the start button. Windows 7 is the way to go really, if possible. But Windows 8 can be made to look more or less like 7 with a bit of tweaking. And for all those still on XP, remember that Microsoft is ending support for it in April, so it will start to become more vulnerable to hacking etc. Support is ending for Windows XP - Microsoft Windows

all of micro-sith software is way too buggy for me and has been since billy boy let the money grubbing lawyers run the place.
windows 7 was a pain to have to run rebuild on because of its snapshot retention of the old partitions, this made rebuild run for hours even on a fast system.
windows 8 is a poor attempt to mimic android.
vista had an annoying problem with driver updates.
stick with linux if you can even if you get a new laptop
you will be happier with its performance and security

Any thoughts on just getting a tablet Biff?

If you aren't running anything demanding then they are ok for browsing and movies etc.

The only issue I have with mine is that it's too small for any amount of typing. Storage is also fairly limited.

The most Important starting point is your budget.

Work out how much you are willing to spend on your new toy and then look for the best bang for buck.

That's how I've always done it anyway :)

I hate windows 8 too, however that shouldn't be your concern, I would recommend a minimum intel core i5 for a laptop, higher spec if possible.

I3 minimum (intel)

No need to stretch to i5 as most are dual core anyway (even some i7's)

4gb ram is another thing to look at

Classicshell or that one by iobit bring back the startmenu etc.

Im in the camp that hated metro and they havent brought back the start menu in windows 8.1

All it does is take you back to metro

This was also my thoughts or you could go halfway between and look at a Netbook.

If you're up for real change try a MAC. We run 6 and have done for the past 5 or 6 years. The main reason I changed from PC to MAC was I was feed up with having to run de-bugging programs every week to clear the s!!! out of them. Even with security and firewall programs in place some stuff still got through. (Touch wood) We have never been bugged since we changed to Mac. They take a bit of getting used to but there is a saying "Now you're on a MAC you'll never go back." and believe me I won't go back to anything Windows based.

Those viruses are from your **** sites etc.

Install a hips like comodo firewall etc and say good bye to viruses

thanks men for the input , im not the most computer savvy individual so some of the techno speak was lost on me lol.

yes as marv mentioned a netbook is the way to go for me , not interested in a tablet , need keyboard and proper pc functionality.

ultimately my meagre budget will decide , which rules out fancy apple airbooks and the like.
i mean a grand for a mac ??? seriously ?? pfft some folk are just happy to throw money around to buy into a brand.
suckers lol.

Not always but netbooks generally lack the power and resources of laptops but if you're not running any epic applications like AutoCad or Photoshop etc then a mid-range netbook should be fine. I'd just shop around for any decent brand name and hang out for a special offer. If you're not a complete IT clothes horse or snob you'll get a decent deal on one where they're bringing out a newer model in the near future so they want to shunt the previous model quickly.
