smoke alarm install , took neutral from nearest light and live from nearest switch connected smokey switched power on and only light that worked was the one i took neutral from and the smokey worked every other light had no neutral.
puzzled :s

any ideas

am not being funny but when i have been in these situations its always been something simple like the guys are sayin connection clamped on insulation or broken wire at connection just hard to see because the panic sets in , u should have went out and sat in the van for 10 mins , tenner says you never drilled thru the cable

ok then , lets look objectively....

what will be your approach to fault finding on your next visit ?
which connections have been proved 100% and which remain in doubt ?
forget the work you carried out and consider that the fault developed was just a
co-incidence and begin from there...
remove the smoke completely and see if lights come back on....
check bulbs / lamps in lights........

plenty to go on.

So, checked your terminations, positive you didn't mix up switch wire and perm.
neutral was taken from light and live from switch........
If it was me and I didn't have the right test gear, I'd be out with the multi meter and start tracing cables, suspecting there must be a brake in the cable due to the working/reworking of the cable ends. At the very least buzz the cables out to check for continuity... Be sure there's not a brake before more head scratching.
If no success check for continuity on the light fixture no idea if you had a ceiling rose or what... Just a suggestion though.
