Re: Tell us about your faults !

just remembered another stupid one
about 10 years ago or so
I worked for a fire protection company, I installed and repaired the fire alarms systems
nice work long hours
one of the directors of the said co had bought an ex local authority house and renovated it for re sale
now this lad was a lazy sod, idle, and cut corners, also not a qualified electrician
he had fitted an intruder alarm and it was giving problems to the new owner so I was sent to look at it
while on site they asked me to test a light on the landing, I opened the rose and could not quite fathom out the 2 way switching???
whatever I did with the switches the lamp was still live, I went downstairs and opened the new consumer unit then the worried look came upon my face
every single MCB had a blue wire connected, the Neutral bar had the Live connected and yes the incoming neutral fed the MCBs
worse the CPC was not connected from the incoming supply as it was too short!!!
I removed the main cutout from the company head and took the fuse out and crushed it with a hammer
I had to explain to the customer that the wiring was so bad he would have been killed, I called the Supply company in to get an indepdant inspection as the customer thought I was joking, the chap who arrived was horrified, we found further faults, wires taped behind plaster, wires hanging, incorrect sized cable
the whole place had to be rewired by an approved contractor whilst the owner moved out
it was awkward for me as I had to tell the boss, he knew his stepson was an idiot but mummy was on the firm and her sons were perfect and could do no wrong and it was made out I was an idiot
I kept my head down for a while
some months later I had to visit the idiots new abode, he had built an extension at the rear of the house and plastered in the supply companies incoming tails, right were I was about to drill for a curtain
shortly after I caught him out after he bodged the wiring to a fire alarm system and put lives at risk, so I told mummy exactly what I thought of her and her sons and left
the firm sold out some while later
a few weeks before that I had visited a large site in manchester and was assisting the extinguisher engineer to move all the extinguishers to a side workshop for testing
guess what we opened up the water extinguishers and not one had the gas cylinder fitted, all full of water but no cylinder, guess who had done the last service?
some people should be locked up

Re: Tell us about your faults !

this same lad on my first week with the company drove me in his long wheelbase transit to Newcastle from cheltenham
on the return journey he asked me to drive, now on the way up he was speeding, tailgating and yakking on the mobile
I drove about a mile to a service station for fuel and being old and wise I checked the van over, this is about 4 tonne all up LWB twin rear wheels fully loaded
front tyres bald, tracking out and wires showing
rear tyres under pressure and blad due to deflation ripping tread away, you could smell them, one headlight out, wiper blades u/s no screenwash and he needed a longer dipstick as it would not reach the oil?????????????????????????????
lucky it was early and it was next to a main ford commercial place
oh he also had huge bull bars fitted, what an arse
drove it to the ford place and rang the office and told them no way would I either drive it or be a passenger in it
ford dealer sorted it out 4 hours and a big bill
I had only 10 quid on me so I left it for the imbecile to sort out
driving home after wards he moaned that I drove too slowly! a lorry jackniffed and I managed to stop, he went bloody quite when he thought about what could have happened, total berk
he also bought a huge stacking tool chest and drove off from the depot with the side sliding door open and the tool chest not anchored, we all saw it and tried ringing him but as usual he ws blethering on the phone
6 miles later arriving at site he finds his tools missing
all strewn over the roundabout, the firm had to pay for loads of punctures and paint damage to vehicles
turns out he also buggered an engine in a Royal Navy ship by laziness
funny thing is he was a pleasant lad nice natured, but mummy bigged him up so much he thought he could do anyhting
last I saw if him he was driving a delivery van
and just to make you laugh, this is dead true, the boss took on a secretary now when he took them on it ws not typing skills that counted but cleavage and this girl had plenty
our young idiot fell in love with her and decided to marry her, mummy was away for a week and would not have allowed her precious child to wed such a lowly girl,so he loaded up the van and drove her to Gretna green hoping ot get married quick!!
trouble is they stopped doing that about 40 years ago what a wally

Re: Tell us about your faults !

I could write a book about the boy and his brother pure muppets the pair of them
every job he visited he left something behind
we used to collect it all up and lock it in a steel cabinet
oh and he got done by the old bill for talking on the phone while driving, I was in the van as a passenger and he was making calls and talking for about 30 miles on the motorway and lighting smokes as well
I saw the police car following us, he didnt
when they stopped the van one of the coppers asked me to come with him away from the van! he asked me about the driver and I told him that I had seen them following and told the muppet to put the phone down but his reply is un printable
when I told the copper that the name on the side of the van was his and he was a director he was surprised
they did him for due care and attention, the phone law not being in place then 3 points and a 300 pound fine?
he also used my 24V SDS drill as a screwdriver for some reason, fitted the chuck and put a crosshead bit in it
a bloody great Bosch SDS drill???
that did a lot of damage and the blood went everywhere

There I was fumbling around in the dark trying to turn the power on.....I just had a feeling it wasnt a kitten I was stroking!

Re: Tell us about your faults !

I got called to a council house. Complaint was about fire alarm system (D Grade) that goes off 3~4 times daily without any particular reason. The system had 5 smoke detectors and one heat detector and all wirings have been done in trunking. I removed first one and oh gosh .. :( waves of cockroaches running out. Interesting was they used detectors like their cities and trunking like motorway !! Each of the detectors were contain 40~50 of them and hundreds of their eggs. The worst part was when the tenant start killing them on laminate floor with his bare foot for god sake !!! The sound was DISGUSTING.

Re: Tell us about your faults !

iv been working in ( faulty towers ) this week. it wud b more easy to tell u wat is right about the house. in the basement there are 3 iso switches with no earthing attached which means the the equipment being served has no protection. a cu on top floor is fed from a 30 a rewireable fuse via a 2.5 mm cable. the cu has 4 breakers, 32a 20a 16a and 5a. overload. then the polish builders added a room on top floor and fed the new sockets off the lighting circuit which is old 1.5 2 core, no earth. the house is falling down. all lighting on stairways are fed from upper cu and when the rcd goes all the that part of building goes into darkness. 3 floors of stairs with no lighting. no emergency lights and no fire doors. the house is full of students renting seperate rooms. chinese landlord. i think i should just condem the whole building.

Re: Tell us about your faults !

went to test an extension that was up and running. the sockets in the bedroom were just a radial 20A mcb . went to end of leg 137v all lights lit on tester. removed a bed side light that was first in the leg 233V every thing fine !!! plug anything into the socket 137V !!! .Changed socket everything great ... what u think was the problem ?

Re: Tell us about your faults !

Live & neutral belling out when something is pluged into socket (now replaced) think its a faulty socket ? Never bell,d out internal parts of a socket before...

Nothing you can do with that but say 'This needs a full rewire, this is how much it costs'. Any arguments with that and I'd be issuing a danger notice and walking away. Don't forget, the place is likely in this state because the landlord is a cheapskate, and these people have to learn one way or another if they pay peanuts they get monkeys.
