At a house today to do a job. Had to pull the fuse and found the attached in the meter cupboard. Customer tells me there is another unit in the garage, both serve a caravan (I didn't verify this as it had nothing to do with my work). Both units have had the SWA made-off with BS951 clamps. One of the units was installed yesterday by the 'local' unregistered electrician. Explained to the customer it was wrong, but she didn't care!

As an apprentice I spent many a day wiring and glanding SWA, anything up to 300mm singles, but I'll never forget the 4mm 4 core I had to strip in the depths of winter, Stanley knife in hand, one quick slip and it was down to a&e for me, 8 stitches and a day off.
needless to say, that day I learnt a valuable lesson, always cut away from you

I wonder how many here would think STA is an art to terminate?? Not that many of the younger sparks here, would have even heard of it, let alone seen it! The ''T'' stands for Tape, it's exactly the same make-up as SWA, except instead of galv' steel wires it has galv' steel tape that is wrapped (50% overlay) around the cable!! Come to that the how about the double wrapped tape (SDTA) cables!! lol!!
We had some SWA come out once and it had a lead jacket in it, haven't seen it since. Some one said it was for laying underwater so it didn't move about, sound about right?

Seen it Eng, but not used it.
im sure after I thought about it, I'd manage ok.

Think again then, that stuff takes a bit of practice to get it right!! lol!!

Never seen or heard of it! Or maybe I have seen it but just thought it was SWA! Was this before SWA and has it now been phased out?

You can tend to identify STA cable from SWA, as you can see the tape overlays under the PVC sheaths... It's still manufactured as far as i know, probably more for heavy industry maybe, just not used as much these days!!

I take everything i've said back in this thread.

Appologies to everyone i disagreed with...you were all correct, SWA is an ART and this is beautiful. Stunning, Stunning, Stunning. I love how each individual strand is posistioned differently to create a dramatic image. Wowzers.

(p.s. wade88 i bet this is a genuine attempt of yours ;) )
